Dave, these things can happen. My eldest seemed to have given up whilst in 6th form college. He went to work for about 3 years and enrolling at another college where he found that he could do what wanted. Upshot he succeeded in necessary A levels, went to Uni and got a 2.1. The degree show he put on (with others from the same course) was challenging to say the least. He is now in the job he liked and is due to for further promotion.

I fell for you both Dave and domonijo, my sons went through the same process about 16 years ago with poor old dad tearing his hair out and wondering which one would end up as a dustman first (sorry - not PC I should have said Domestic Waste Disposal Engineer ). All turned out OK in the end and both of them got their degrees.
From my many years of experience, university is not the right solution for everybody but it is certainly harder to rise in the ranks of a big company without a degree as there is so much bias towards academia over practical ability. Most companies now run training programs for new graduates which can last up to 5 years. Cynically the 'training' is to ensure that the graduate becomes a company 'line toeing' clone and is generally unemployable elsewhere. I'm so glad I am out of this rat race!
