MCM1

Saw this keithhenry post and replied:
This may or may not be related but watch out for large differences between elapsed time and CPU time. I've had two occasions now where MCM1 WUs on a WIN XP C2D box had elapsed times almost double that of the CPU time. I've found an OS reboot seems to fix that. Not sure what the source of the problem is.

I think you may be onto something!

Running Vista on an old Acer Laptop AMD Turion 2.0GHz only being used to crunch.

The last couple of MCM1 WUs had significant divergence between CPU & Elapsed times approaching double. Switched to FAAH and after 4 hours elapsed only 2 mins CPU & no checkpoint. Rebooted. The FAAH WU restarted at zero and it now appears to be running normally.

To my non-technical mind seems as though MCM clogged the processor which took a reboot (LAIM off) to clear. Though it could just be a quirk of an old and tired machine.

Anyone seen similar behaviour?

Re: MCM1

Unless you run Task Manager or equivalent and check exactly what is happening you're unlikely to spot the source of the problem.

I HAVE seen elapsed time grow way beyond CPU time, but every time it's happened to me it's been because of badly written Flash code in an advert in my browser eating most of one of my CPUs. If a machine really is for crunching ONLY, then that shouldn't be the problem. But how many of us forget that the browser is even up and running?

I run Firefox, and what I see is plugin-container.exe running away. Once the advert has been displayed it keeps on running, even if it is in a background tab. By closing and re-opening each tab in turn I have been able to identify the site, and by refreshing the page a few times until it shows a different ad, or by closing the ad if allowed to, I have been able to identify the offender. I have now written to three different web sites to complain about such adverts and in each case they were quickly taken down.

It annoys me that the companies who supply such adverts don't check them before they distribute them!

Re: MCM1

The ads that really annoy me are the ones that auto play the video at volume 11 and no means to switch the darn thing off! A local news site used to have these on every page.

Not seen too much difference between times on my units. Some of the 18hr CEP2 have had an extra 30mins elapsed time on them.

Re: MCM1

If you're running Firefox, pop AdBlock Plus and NoScript on - most of those nasty adverts will just go away and not load! smile

There's a couple of complaints in the forum about WCG spam email here and here

Sending out 50+ copies of the same email to a user is definitely spam and someone deserves a rap over the knuckles. wink

Leaving aside the spam aspect it's good to see WCG chasing up InActive members. The first link above has a screen shot of the email text and I approve. biggrin

The two complaint originators last crunched 03/01/14 15:39:19 [1,530+ hour(s) ago] and 26/12/13 22:34:36 [1,715+ hour(s) ago] so the email was well directed though 50+ copies is a somewhat excessive overkill! wink

I wonder if it will prompt any of our InActive members to resume crunching confused
