Microwave imaging could provide safer, more comfortable breast cancer screening
Microwave breast imaging (MBI) represents a promising non-invasive technology for detection of breast tumours. It does not utilize ionizing radiation nor require breast compression, potentially offering a safer and more comfortable method for breast cancer screening. MBI is based on the differences in the electrical properties of malignant and normal breast tissue at microwave frequencies. Cancerous tissue has increased water content and vascularity compared with healthy tissue, resulting in a higher dielectric constant. MBI can quantify the location, shape and/or morphological properties of lesions based on this dielectric contrast. Chemotherapy-free stem cell transplant promises safer leukemia treatment
[Working with mice] researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have developed a method of stem cell transplantation that does not require radiation or chemotherapy. Instead, the strategy takes an immunotherapeutic approach, combining the targeted elimination of blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow with immune-modulating drugs to prevent the immune system from rejecting the new donor stem cells. Ancient natural medicine could improve cancer treatment
Plants used by the indigenous population in Australia, the Aboriginal people, to fight infection, among other things, may be able to help cancer patients who are no longer susceptible to chemotherapy, a new study from the University of Copenhagen shows. “Cancer cells resistant to SN-38 [Irinotecan chemo drug] produce a large amount of a protein responsible for transporting the medicine out of the cancer cell again, a so-called efflux pump. This natural substance isolated from the Australian plant is able to inhibit this pump, which makes it difficult for the cancer cell to remove the medicine effectively,” explains Professor Dan Stærk, who supervised the project. Naturally occurring protein sticks cancer cells to surrounding tissue to slow their spread
“We’ve seen that patients suffering from specific forms of breast, gastric and lung cancer who had lower levels of MFSD1 had a worse outcome," said Roblek. "A high level of MFSD1 seems to be protective – it works like a suppressor of tumor metastasis." The team's discovery lays the groundwork for new forms of treatment that target MFSD1, potentially elevating its levels to suppress the spread of metastatic cancer. Interestingly, the scientists also note that it could be used to guide treatments by revealing how aggressive a cancer may be, if they can identify the genes encoding for the MFSD1 protein. “If this marker becomes more established, doctors can use it to help classify how aggressive the cancer is and to decide between different treatment options," said Siekhaus. Prostate cancer antibody treatment shows promise in dogs (and humans)
High levels of [regulatory T cells] Tregs have been detected in several types of cancer, so one emerging treatment is to administer antibodies that reduce levels of Tregs in the area. For the new study, scientists from the University of Tokyo investigated this technique in dogs, which have a prostate with a similar structure to that in humans. These dogs were pets that had naturally occurring prostate cancer. [Antibody drug] mogamulizumab has already been approved for use in humans by the FDA and similar agencies in other countries, as a possible treatment for a range of other diseases. Keto diet may enhance chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer
Alongside decreasing levels of glucose and insulin, the new study found the ketogenic diet increased the body’s reliance on 3-hydroxybutyrate as an energy source. Rabinowitz says increasing levels of 3-hydroxybutyrate seems to amplify the cancer-killing effect of chemotherapy. It is important to note the study found the ketogenic diet alone had no effect on the tumor cells. So the diet in and of itself cannot beat cancer. Only when paired with chemotherapy did the researchers see amplified treatment effects. NHS England is running a trial of 140,000 people aged between 50 to 77 to see how well a test to identify 50 different cancers using blood samples would work for the NHS. The trial is being run by NHS England, Cancer Research UK, King's College London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit and GRAIL Bio UK Ltd (a branch of Grail Inc).
----------------------------------------The Galleri test looks at DNA in the blood to determine if any of it may have come from cancer cells. Although the test does not look at the genetic code itself, it looks at the pattern of other markers on the DNA to flag a possible cancer signal. The aim of the trial is to see if using the Galleri test alongside standard cancer testing in the NHS can help to find cancers at an early stage, when they are easier to treat.
