No CEP2 Work

I have recently built a new computer and set up BOINC. It got a few CEP2 workunits but somewhere along the line of getting everything configured it stopped. I have not had any for at least a couple weeks now. I have tried resetting the project a couple times, adding swap, and generally increasing RAM/disk limits. I have also set my preferences to prefer only CEP2 units, just to make sure I'm getting a fair chance.

I followed the other similar thread here about not getting work, and followed the advice. I don't really want to reinstall my system, though. straight face

Re: No CEP2 Work

It could be that Linux-only problem. But you have a lot of projects; BOINC tends to get all confused in that case (actually it inevitably does so with far fewer projects than that whenever I try it). It may be an example of the following problem due to the "Recent Estimated Credit" technique that the BOINC scheduler uses, though the messages differ:
https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad,35738_offset,60#436362

The only solution I have found is to run only one CPU project (WCG for me) and only one GPU project on any given machine. If I want to run other projects, I use a different PC. In your case, I would let all the projects run dry, uninstall BOINC and especially delete the BOINC data folder, and start over with fewer projects. Or you could just wait and see if it starts behaving properly; you never know.

Re: No CEP2 Work

Nattgew, had the same thing, but right smack from clean install... after some 36 hours or so the CEP2 started to come. Some members found a simple ''toggling' of the project selections worked for them. Select MCM1+FAAH, deselect CEP2 > Save > Hit update and study messages. Then select CEP2 exclusively, deselect all else, including "if there is no wrk". If the client then tries fetching work from WCG, it will hopefully tell why [bandwidth?... you've entered a restriction]. Just let it sit as no amount of reinstalling will do this... my cards is on something funky on the server side... flags not passing to the feeder properly. On each connect the client is supposed to tell the server about the current config and basis bases the 'send yes/no' decision on that. For that, start with hitting the Clear button in the client computing preferences screen to remove local prefs, so only the Website device profile options rule, which presently are ignored per

10-Nov-2013 19:27:28 [---] Reading preferences override file

Then mod in the appropriate web device profile and hit update again in client, twice, for more observation. First hit to transfer web prefs to client from server, second update to let it request work based on latest web prfs [yes that's right... the server wants to know the latest latest from the client, each and every time]

I'm runnning the Gianfranco Locutusofborg ppa package of 7.2.28 on Ubuntu now... no issues.

Re: No CEP2 Work

Thank you both for your helpful replies.

It may be an example of the following problem due to the "Recent Estimated Credit" technique that the BOINC scheduler uses, though the messages differ

That's very interesting, I had noticed the "not highest priority" messages but it seemed to fetch work for everything but CEP2 just fine so I didn't worry too much. I've given up on my initial hope that it would eventually work itself out.
I only had so many attached so that BOINC would associate all the accounts together, they used to be broken up. I detached the ones that were set to "no more work", maybe that will help.

Some members found a simple ''toggling' of the project selections worked for them.

I have started this process, it looks like it did fine with MCM1+FAAH. I have now set it to only CEP2 and no others and will let it run until it needs more work. I also cleared local preferences and restarted BOINC.
Hopefully it will at least give something more helpful than just "No tasks are available".

Thanks again for your help. I'll update when I find out more. If no amount of fiddling with preferences and updating seems to work, I will resort to wiping out BOINC and starting over. Just hoping it doesn't come to that. wink

Re: No CEP2 Work

I made the other thread you linked to in the first post.
Looks like your problem is different. On my problem rig I never got a message about no work being available for CEP2.
My rig never got and never asked for CEP2 wu's.

Re: No CEP2 Work

Well toggling the settings didn't seem to work. It gives the same message ("No tasks are available") but of course sends no tasks now. I got that error a couple times overnight. Anywhere besides the message log I should look for more information about this? I like how some projects let you see some of the server side messages generated from each work request. Makes troubleshooting easier.
I'm going to try toggling settings again.

Also, when I selected FAAH again I got a bunch of download errors. "File has wrong size" and "checksum or signature error" on a bunch of files. It did manage to get some work, though. Not sure whether this is a problem on my end or not.

Re: No CEP2 Work

On the 'wrong size', now having a mention in 3 threads ;>)

Really don't know what to say. Ditch the client [uninstall], delete/eradicate the full install and BOINC data directory and start from new, if you're willing.

(Dr. A. was pensive making perturbed faces on the video in September asking himself and the audience why there was an effectively 20% drop in active participation over the past 12 months... how many non-technical throw the towel with this type of unresolvable issue?)

Re: No CEP2 Work

Well I was reluctant, but after playing around with some things I ended up reinstalling.
I deleted everything from the /var/lib/boinc directory, reinstalled BOINC for good measure, and started attaching projects.
I have left my settings to only allow CEP2 work units. I am still getting the "No tasks available" message. Maybe it will go away as SekeRob suggested... I will wait and see.

Re: No CEP2 Work

The next time that this occurs, can you send the sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml and sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml to support@worldcommunitygrid.org attention Kevin and I'll take a look?
