Best Buy confirmed that it's the power supply that went bad. They are running diags on the rest of the machine. It's proving to be an interesting experience too. I did let the Geek Squad guy upsell me to their tech support package. It wasn't really much more than what I was looking at to start with and is good for any service for a year on three devices. Probably not a bad deal for your typical consumer if you have old machines like me. Anyway, you're supposed to be able to check repair status online. Called today as that had not changed since I took the machine in. Found out that they were working on it and had confirmed the PS was bad. Told me that it's too much paperwork to do to get the status update on the website. The surprise was that the machine uses a "proprietary" PS and I would have to get one. They use "generic" replacement parts which is not a surprise. Since it's a Lenovo machine, the "proprietary" PS made sense. I replaced the battery with a compatible replacement a good while back on the laptop and it has complained about it not being a Lenovo battery since. Having to find a PS myself turned out to b a good thing. PN for the PS is 41A9701. Found a 54Y8804 that two websites and a phone call confirm is compatible that is brand new out of the box for $23 from an outfit Amazon fronts for. Next best was $50+ for a refurbed.
----------------------------------------Hmm, laptop keyboard is acting up tonight. Hopefully, just needs a good cleaning but it's easy to replace in the worst case. |

I am going to take them off my list of computers that I recommend. I guess that applies to laptops as well due to the battery issue. I keep 2 extra power supplies in stock for computer repairs..but they are generic (one 400W or so and one 700-800W for hotrods with big video cards). I say that because of the proprietary nature...not the cost; that seems reasonable/cheap. BTW how many watts is that? Well, I'm not sure Best Buy is using the term proprietary in the right sense. They described the PS as a "slimline". From lookng at it in the machine, there's nothing slim about it. I think it's a case of it's a PS that is only found in Lenovo's but is made by third parties. My machines seem to be showing their age. The hard drive is also wearing out so that's another thing to sort out. As far as upgrading the OS's, I need to see if the CPU's can handle Win7.
