Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 63 smilesmile

FWIW, I have my quad back from Best Buy - FOUR WEEKS after I took it to them. Suffice to say that the nightmare is not over and that I do not ever intend to associate with Best Buy in any way for however much time I have left on Earth. They are in VERY rare company. American Express started the list about 30 years ago and has been alone until now.

At least I have BOINC back and running on it.

Well that sucks. Sorry to hear.

In the end, it's going to force to me do what I should have done long ago. I know enough about PCs to be dangerous. I need to feel I have some modicum of competence with them. It's not really that hard. You just have to bite the bullet and do it. As for the quad, basically they determined that the power supply was gone. Having to get the replacement for them was an expected surprise but was a good experience and probably saved me a few bucks. If that was all that had been involved, I would have had the machine back in about a week or so and a totally different view of them. Their diagnostics said that my hard drive was going bad and could fail at any time. I've lost a hard drive before and it's not fun. What was frustrating was that their diagnostics apparently could not tell if the problem was with the platters or the drive head. Problems with bad spots on the platters can usually be addressed with chkdsk. If it's the head going bad, you're gambling every second you have the machine running. Net of the saga with the disk drive is that I ended up with a 500GB drive replacing a 250GB (thereabouts) for free. I did have to buy a set of recovery disks for the OS and supply to them. Their backup and restore process basically got a backup of the old drive, installed the OS from the recovery disk, and data files. When you say restore to me, I define that as things are like they were before. I did not get a restore. I do have the old drive and they are sending me the power/cable so that the drive will have power and I can connect it to the quad via a USB port. That will let me sort out what all I need to hunt down and reinstall program-wise. Their explanation today for why they couldn't move programs over was copyright issues and getting the registry entries in. I had thought initially that having them deal with the drive issue would be faster that if I did it on my own. Four weeks later, I still have to address that issue with just the easy part down - physically replacing the hard drive and reinstalling the OS. The amazing thing is that if they could manage to communicate with their customers (with maybe three exceptions, I initiated any calls) and could accurately set clear expectations, my story could be very different.

I usually turn computers like that around in 1-3 days. I don't understand how they can step on people like that and stay in business.

In the end, ... could accurately set clear expectations, my story could be very different.

I usually turn computers like that around in 1-3 days. I don't understand how they can step on people like that and stay in business.

When I took my Lenovo desktop in to have the power supply replaced, I had it back the next day. This was after they cleaned the inside and verified it was working properly. When I went in to pick it up, I booted it so I could enter my password and verify things were working properly. I have had them (Best Buy) upgrade the OS on my laptop from XP to 7, and I considered the work they had done to save existing files to be very good.

I had Best Buy install a new drive on the desktop and I had no problems with the work they did. One thing I did was get a Windows 7 professional version to install and I provided the Windows 7 for the install. I had no programs or data I was concerned about losing. I am using that system while writing this post. I would normally not believe what I was told about a hard drive going bad. I have had this laptop for 4 years now and I got it from IBM when I retired, so I don't know how long I had been in service before I bought it as a used machine.

Even though I had good experience with Best Buy in the past, I treat it situation based on my requirements at the time. I don't expect more than one system to go down at any one time, and I have two other systems I can use for backup purposes.
