Thinking about buying a multi core workstation for processing when i get back to the US. What are the best options out there? I have minimal computer knowledge but would like to set up a rig that crunches like a superhuman. I saw some HPX workstations that i think had 16 cores or more im not sure. What am I looking at and where should I look to buy one? Prices? Thanks.

My strategy is to employ pretty high-end consumer type machines with the newer I7 intel chips. Just using multiple machines. Each of them run 8 simultaneous tasks and I run several of them. Both strategies have advantages. I wish you the best of luck with that and welcome back. |

Prices? Thanks. You are way out of my league when you talk about machines like that. I know nothing about them except that they are expensive. My strategy is to employ pretty high-end consumer type machines with the newer I7 intel chips. Just using multiple machines. Each of them run 8 simultaneous tasks and I run several of them. Both strategies have advantages. I wish you the best of luck with that and welcome back. Chris, I'm no expert on computer hardware but you work with them long enough and you end up learning a bit. First, you will want to start learning more about computers. You don't need to be able to communicate directly with a computer in binary (I've actually heard stories of such folks), just have a decent understanding of the basics. Computers can be intimidating. Learning how they work is a lot like learning how to work on cars. I don't know exactly what you mean by minimal computer knowledge as you're version of minimal could be extreme (I know that thing under the front of the car is the engine and I have to put gas in this place on the side often) or just modest (I know how to change the oil, change a flat tire, add coolant, and jump a dead battery). As for buying a computer that crunches like a superhuman, I don't blame you. Having seen WCG id a potentialnew class of drungs for HIV and find seven new drug candidates for childhood neuroblastoma, I know what we're doing here is making a difference that will be counted in lives. I would love to have my own little "supercomputer" churning out WUs faster than a politician can spend my tax dollars. One day. From what I've picked up over the years, getting a high end computer is like buying a Maserati, Lotus or such (to continue with the car analogy). You will pay top dollar and you will pay a premium. With enough money, there are plenty of folks willing to sell you one. One thing folks who want a powerful cruncher can do is go buy a machine targeted for your high-end video gamers. That's not a bad strategy but it is an expensive one. Another approach is to buy a machine designed to be used as a server. Again, that tends to get expensive. Reality is though that expensive is relative to how much you have. What I've seen with computers is that there is usually several "levels" and each has its own price range. I don't see much in the way of "desktops" on display these days. Tablets are the rage and you'll see plenty of them. I'm going to ignore tablets for now since they're not really well-suited to crunching (they're all about apps). You can get really nice, powerful laptops but just being a laptop can require trade offs that get you portability that's not needed for a machine you want to sit there and crunch. If you go looking for a good desktop, you'll find low-end machines that are pretty cheap (let's say under $750). They are your basic machine. It's like getting a car that is a 4-cylinder, sub-100 horsepower with lots of plastic in the interior. It gets you from point A to point B but not real fast or, if A and B are far apart, comfortably. I believe these are your basic two-core CPU machines nowadays. You'll see the next level of desktops will be more powerful and have their own price range (say $1000-2000). These are going to be your quads and maybe some low-end 8-cores. Above that, you get the nice, fast 8-core machines that can make really nice crunchers. Yes, it's been a while since I've bought a machine and I bet you can halve my numbers for what they cost now. For machines that use Intel chips for the CPU, you're talking about I3's for low end machines, I5's for the middle and I7's for above that. Let me stop for a moment and say that I really hope I'm not discouraging you at this point. This may sound a bit complicated or intimidating even but it's not that bad. When you go above the I7's, you're getting into machines that are often meant for a particular purpose. If you buy a nice "gaming" machine, the CPU in it won't necessarily be the absolute fastest out there. You'll have a fast CPU yes, but you'll have lots of video power so the machine can keep the screen updated rapidly. The CPU will be fast enough to support the video. Putting more cores on one motherboard seems to be one approach to making a computer more powerful. This is where I hear about 12 and 16 core motherboards. I think I may have even heard of 24. It's not just a matter of seeing how many cores or CPUs you can put on one motherboard. They have to work together well. You can't put a V-12 engine in just any car. These motherboards with lots of CPUs on them are one of the "bleeding edges" with computers. When you get the latest and greatest of anything, you're going to pay a premium for it and it may have a few things that don't live up to claims. You may well find that for what you'll pay for one machine with 12 cores, you can get possibly two good I7 8-core machines or at least be well on your way to getting the second one. New technology always gets cheaper in time as the makers tweak the design to deal with the quirks the show up in the first ones. Reliability tends to be better too. I suspect you'd do best to work with something that's in your comfort zone so to speak. I'd love to be able to configure my own custom cruncher but I'm nowhere near up to speed on what I need to know to be able to do that. As you get into these high-end machines, I get the impression that you have more choices about how you configre the machine and it's easier to configure one that, while it works, may not be the best. Consumer-end machines use a small number of standardized configurations that don't require you to understand as much. I've gone on long enough for one post (and probably then some) and I'm sure that there's a few things I can likely be corrected on too. Point is that, if you want to crunch more, you can. There are different options as to how to do that and you want to find one that you're comfortable with. As you learn more about computers, your comfort level will grow and you'll find that you're okay with some options that you aren't now. Keep discussing this here and we'll do what we can to help. Most importantly, if what I've said here is discouraging or makes it seem daunting, please please please ignore me! |
