Re: BOINC 7.2 Client Testing Discussion

Hello all,

Installed latest 7.2.42 on both Windows 7 and 8, both 64-bit and have not had any issues. I installed it over the previous version and both times did not face any issues. Just had to make sure that it did not install the screen saver. Hope this helps.

Thanks

Same here
My machines are

i7-2630QM win 7 64 bits (installed several days ago)

i7-2600K win 7 64 bits (installed several days ago)

i7-4700MQ win 8.1 64 bits (just finished installing)

Re: BOINC 7.2 Client Testing Discussion

A couple of observations.

1) The link Kevin Reed gave was for the Windows 32-bit BOINC program, whereas both 32-bit and 64-bit programs are offered on the BOINC website. Is 32-bit going to be the only WCG-validated version? If so, and if you previously had an earlier 64-bit version installed, the 32-bit installation will not remove the files for the 64-bit version from \Program Files\, although the list of installed programs in Control Panel will show only the 32-bit version. Some instructions about this situation might be worthwhile when the change occurs.

2) BOINC v7 brings the change in terminology about cache settings, going from v6's "Connect to network about every nn days" and "Cache nn extra days of work" (on the Device Profile web page) to v7's "Minimum work buffer" and "Max additional work buffer" (on the BOINC Preferences / network usage tab). The Device Profile web page should be updated to reflect this.

Re: BOINC 7.2 Client Testing Discussion

When I used the link and downloaded it AUTOMATICALLY downloaded the 64 bit version on all my 64 bit machines (shrug)

Re: BOINC 7.2 Client Testing Discussion

Oooh, that's very odd! The BOINC website gives boinc_7.2.42_windows_x86_64.exe as the filename for the Windows 64-bit option, and boinc_7.2.42_windows_intelx86.exe (as per Kevin's link) as the 32-bit. The latter installed in C:\Program Files (x86) on my Win 7 64-bit machine.

Re: BOINC 7.2 Client Testing Discussion

Well, that was confusing...

Following Kevins link (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.2.42_windows_intelx86.exe)
you get a direct download of the 32 bit version.

Although it installed ok, no config data was picked up from the existing 7.2.33 - 64 bit install (project, team, data directory).

It would have been better to link both the 32 and 64 bit version (https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php), where i would have chosen the 64 bit .

After uninstalling the 32 bit, and installing the 64 bit, BOINC picked right up and seems to be running well.

I agree, when I upgraded to v7 the website terminology seemed backwards compared to the field it fills in the new client (ie, I thought "Connect to network about every nn days" would go to "Max additional work buffer")
