I'm running BOINC 6.12.43 on a C2Q Q6600 XP SP2 system. All was fine until a scheduler request at 02:08:40 UTC today which failed with an "Unrecognized HTTP Content-Encoding".
----------------------------------------The sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file in the BOINC data directory looks fine, but it does contain the following resends: <message priority="low">Resent lost task E220247_414_K.23.C19FH12N3.00406266.3.set1d06_0</message> Those tasks have sent time "24/03/14 08:47:47" (coincides with the most recent scheduler request failure) and time due"03/04/14 02:08:26". The FAHV and CEP2 tasks I'm trying to report were returned and validated at 24/03/14 02:08:41. From the following HTTP debug trace the problem appears to be due to the "Error while processing content unencoding: invalid stored block lengths" message at 08:24:54. 24/03/2014 08:24:39 | World Community Grid | update requested by user

This is a rare, but not unknown, error. See here and here
----------------------------------------The common consensus seems to be it will resolve it's self in a short time. You might want to consider upgrading from BOINC 6.12.43. BOINC 7.0.64 is stable and is used extensively in WCG BOINC 7.2.42 is in the later stages of BETA testing prior to adoption by WCG as standard. See announcement and discussion |

Neither of those posts apply in my case. There's no proxy involved and all other projects have no problems with their scheduler requests.
----------------------------------------I stopped BOINC, manually edited client_state.xml to remove the validated tasks, merged in the new tasks from sched_reply_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml and the input files were successfully downloaded when I restarted BOINC. No other changes were made at my end. First thing I did after that was request a scheduler update which worked: 24/03/2014 14:49:48 | World Community Grid | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. I then suspended work for other projects to force a WCG work request. A new FAHV task was allocated and its input files were successfully downloaded: 24/03/2014 14:52:03 | World Community Grid | Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. The next test will be when BOINC tries to report the FAHV task which is now running.

I just noticed my android host is giving the same 'Unrecognized HTTP Content-Encoding' error as well, it cant talk to the reference site either.
My desktop rigs are fine so far- but my phone is almost out of tasks :( hopefully it will just be a matter of time to fix itself. |

The next test will be when BOINC tries to report the FAHV task which is now running. The FAHV task was reported with no problems: 24/03/2014 20:19:35 | World Community Grid | Computation for task FAHV_x3NF6_B_IN_LEDGFa_rig_0206163_0537_0 finished Based on its current progress the CEP2 task ought to finish in around 4 hours. That'll be long past my bedtime and it's possible that the queued FAHV task will also complete before I'm up.

The CEP2 and FAHV tasks were reported at 05:09:12 UTC, with one faah task being downloaded at 02:37:31 and another at report time.
----------------------------------------I expect the error was a one-off, possibly related to the combination of tasks allocated yesterday. The FAHV task was only sent to me but WU 1035013887 issued 2 CEP2 tasks and is waiting for the other system to complete its task.

Editing client_state and boinc detecting anything untoward during startup would have caused the client_state_prev copy to be replacing client_state. Just saying, your edits may have been dismissed without you noticing and things working after your one-off. Note that the work unit assignment tally of the server is frequently compared with the client's and then cleaned up, no need to ever manually intervene.
----------------------------------------That said, having extra log flags active, last week discovered that a truly too late task where node was off for weeks, task already removed from the result status page, did normally complete the work unit with redline warning of getting no credit in the event log. This result then reported proper, got normally acknowledged as accepted, not a squeak by the server or in the logs as being redundant or unknown on the result status list. Conclusion: Some things happen without feedback. OK, this term apparently 175 years old now, did not bother me. Boinc is robust but far from perfect.
