The best tool to 'eagle eye' cpu time, in brackets, and the elapsed time and the relative efficiency is boinctasks. In one view you can monitor all running tasks on all the machines you have on a lan/wlan. The efficiency column has my greatest interest. don't know for sure, but think you can set some alerts or color codes when the efficiencies dip below a specified level.
Yes, in cases a minimized web browser can still eat lots of cpu time. Firefox with location bar enhancer add-in could run 100%, till the add-in maker fixed it. There are lots of badly behaved add-ins. Then whatever science happened to be running on the same core would pay the price of not getting a foot in sideways. Few weeks ago caught the spreadsheet program out as having taken 6.5gb of virtual memory. Everything started moving snail like. Short of memory and lots of vm usage, speak i/o, is costly in efficiency. If it was just the one task, i'd not worry about it too much. If it repeats, start digging. |

I have an i7 which originally had only 4 gigs of RAM and CEP2 requires more than 1 gig per unit running. I now have an extra 16 gigs so no problem but what you need is a routine to limit the number of CEP2 units running at any one time. I found that I could run 3 and mcm could use the other 5 threads. If you would like a copy of the module that someone else gave me, please email me at Mike.Gibson@sky.com and I will send it to you. It is a routine that you can change with WordPad so that you can restrict any WCG project to any maximum that you wish. Currently I am restricting CEP2 to 7 threads and using the other for CPDN. Thank you for the info Mike. I'll pass on the module but I appreciate the offer.

The offer will remain open and I can supply it modified to your requirements if that would help.

@ Seoulpowergrid
----------------------------------------I'm pretty sure that the module Mike.Gibson refers to app_config.xml It is a well documented standard BOINC feature which has many possible uses see the BOINC wiki and/or browse the forum. It's use to limit the maximum number of concurrent tasks for a project eg CEP2 is commonplace amongst WCG members. Either create or amend using Wordpad in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\ in standard Windows installation <app_config> <app> <name>cep2</name> <max_concurrent>xx </max_concurrent> </app> </app_config> xx Insert number according to personal preference/experience. Trial and error may be necessary. Having created/amended the app_config file don't forget to "Read config file" in BOINC Mgr Advanced. |

Yes, that is the one. With 4GB RAM you would need to restrict to 3 as CEP2 needs about 1.28 GB per unit running. Mike
