I run several android devices that all started about the same time on WCG. They have similar stats but on the main Device Statistics page, they're all labeled the same as "android" despite me giving each a unique name within the android OS.
----------------------------------------On the Results Status page, the android devices are differentiated, but have another strange nomenclature that is hard to remember. Is my phone android_d4783929 or that my wife's?? Does anyone know how I can get WCG to show the device name I selected in the android OS? Naming reflected in WCG seems to work fine for all my Windows 7, XP, and Mac machines. ![]() ![]() |

To change device name is only possible with native boinc.

Thanks for the info. I'm adding more android tablets soon. Managing them will be more difficult, but not impossible.

I agree, I would like to see an option to rename devices.
----------------------------------------The reason for this is I have about 8 or so android devices set up and 1 or 2 are leaving errors in the results. I mean if I view the result status page and filter by Errors then I see quite a few from 2 android devices but its very hard to identify which device its coming from. Is there a way from the android device to view its name? EDIT: A short term solution is to record the last 5 digits of the work unit for your device as it's in progress, and then search for that in the Results Status page. After some time, should have a list of WCG device names and matching results that have been submitted. Unless someone knows of a quicker way! Noted was in previous thread on the topic that the nativeboinc agent has the ability, but it is through a hack. Obviously berkeley and wcg wont enter into hacks. Google could break the hack without notice. Also, the result status page already lists results by a unique device name like android-a3f5d4g. Note these down and you know relatively easy which result comes from which android device. Unfortunately that unique name gets cut off on for instance the device statistics page. This seems fixable to me and was requested to be done, no reply though from anyone at wcg.
NB: Someone commented that the android agent developer at berkeley ended his relationship. Already asked the question if the agent is lollipop ready, the next hack breaking moment. This developer absence being mentioned in that thread. |

Darn - I really think they were on to something with distribution across smart-phones. So many devices out there...

The ability to have a useful device name should have been baked in from the start. Any solution yet? Cheers ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by NixChix at Jun 13, 2015 8:03:04 PM] |

... The event log prints the device name. ... Yes, I found the andtroid_xxxx name in the log. ... I guess I'll have to have a post-itnote next to the computer now. It gets worse. The Device Stats page: right-click on a "name"; copy URL to clip-board; paste into a text editor. "deviceID" is the "ComputerID" listed in the Event Log, along with that "android..." name, at BOINC bootup. So you need to put Both names on your devices' Post-It note. |
