Re: What motherboard, CPU and RAM would you recommend?

If you purchased that computer, make them fix it. If you built it, fix it as its a great system. The new systems can only use approved parts. The PSU and ram has to use what the book says. One of the reasons I won't build a new cruncher with the new chips a mobo's is the strict parts list. Not like the DDR3 era systems. If your unsure, find someone close or ask here. Another place to seek great information on computer building is xtremesystems web site. Great folks and invaluable information. Let us know how it goes.

Re: What motherboard, CPU and RAM would you recommend?

Thanks for the advice Bearcat. I will see how things go. Things are looking better as I have now learned how to get the machine to boot again if errors again. I got somebody to build it locally. If I have any issues they are the 1st to know. Thanks for advice on this topic so far

Mamajuanauk, what do you use to cool your dual CPU's?

-Paul
Mine is water cooled with a custom loop, however, 2 x SNK-P0050AP4 - it's one of the stock Supermicro active heatsinks, works well. Comes with narrow and standard 2011 socket fittings.

Re: What motherboard, CPU and RAM would you recommend?

Thanks Mamahuanauk. You have me dreaming... and visiting pcpartpicker.com. I'd like to build up my efficiency and performance a bit.

I tend to build systems based on what was top-end 4 or 5 years back... I just got a good deal on a used i7-990X CPU on eBay and I'm trying to make it work with a used MSI X58 Pro mobo homebuilt I bought used off craigslist. I have a few such frankencomputers... the rest of my devices are android tablets/phones and rigs I built for my in-laws that run 24/7. Whatever it takes! smile

I agree the company you suggested is very good however I am based in New Zealand so this is no good for me. As I am not able to put parts together myself I use a local business.

If you mean you are not physically able then fair enough, otherwise lots of folks here would be willing and able to guide you.

I am physically not able to as I am confined to a wheelchair. I have been talking to the people that built my machine and they are going to be doing some further testing. Most likely 2nd and 3rd of March

Re: What motherboard, CPU and RAM would you recommend?

Speedy I wish you all the best with your build!
Perhaps if there are other crunchers (I'm sure there are)
in New Zealand,
maybe someone could offer to help with a build.
Your 5960 though, should be awesome,
perhaps they can RMA the motherboard.
I don't know what that stands for except they send it back to the manufacturer for replacement.
2 months... terribly frustrating.

Just a joke but...
RMA
Return to
Manufacturing
A**Hats laughing
which isnt fair,
because i got a new GTX 670 after my first one failed.
That's good service from whoever replaced it.

Re: What motherboard, CPU and RAM would you recommend?

Ok,
gonna hijack this thread a tiny bit...

http://goparallel.sourceforge.net/intel-reveals-details-of-next-gen-xeon-phis/

For those of you who hate links here's my take of a summary (I hate just links posted myself)
So this crazy thing i just saw called Knights Landing, a CPU (standalone)

a quote
"Intel also announced details of the €œKnights Landing€ version of the Xeon Phi that is due to ship in 2015 as an update to the current Knights Corner edition. It also released specs on the Omni-Path Architecture Intel is positioning as a possible replacement for InfiniBand, all as part of a package of high-performance-computing announcements at the recent SC' €™14 Supercomputing conference in New Orleans."

It will be built on the 14NM process, which is important to me because of energy savings and, "Knights Landing will have 16GB of onboard memory, support for DDR4 memory connections just as current Xeon processors do, and between 60 and 72 compute cores" elsewhere it said at 2400mhz speed for the DDR4 memory base DDR4 is 2133.

60 and 72 compute cores.... 14nm...
Now for reality, going to go see how much the old version is...

uhm another link no price yet on landing...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8217/intels-knights-landing-coprocessor-detailed

Ok, just wiped the drool off my face...
Is this even possible for a 'civilian' to buy (non commercial)
one chip.... i'd pay 5000 for this system.
I know there are cheaper methods to get 3 terraflops???? gulp!!!
maybe not cheaper hokie pickins! (thats my edited version of what i was thinking)
So ok someone burst my bubble, I can't find a price.... crying
my gut is telling me 10 grand plus... maybe 20...
whatever might as well be a million at this point.

EDIT: Fun fact, i have 9 windows open in chrome blushing
EDIT2: not so fun fact...IF it was only 5000, which i HIGHLY doubt, that would take me the rest of the year to save up, IF I could convince my wife to go along with me, which I not only doubt I wouldnt blame her one bit.
