Multiple Work Units At Once

G'day All,
I was just wondering why is it that my WCG BOINC client is always running 2 workunits at once?

I am able to force suspend one of the units (so that my CPU concentrates on a single Work Unit). However, this is cumbersome and requires manual intervention for every work unit (not really feasible when my computer crunches 24/7).

I don't believe I've altered any of the major settings within the BOINC config manager. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Cheers,
TC

Re: Multiple Work Units At Once

I don't know what your system is as you have not provided the important information needed for troubleshooting. However, the default settings in BOINC are to run 1 work units per core/thread in your PC. So, a dual core (no Hyper Threading) CPU will run 2 work units at a time. A quad core (no Hyper Threading) will run 4. A quad core (with Hyper Threading) will run 8 work units. WCG has no multi-threaded apps at the moment, so the behavior is expected.

If you want to only run one work unit at a time and not use the CPU to its fullest, you would need to adjust your preferences within your BOINC client.

Advanced view > Tools > Preferences > processor usage tab > On multiprocessor systems, use at most XX% of the processors > Adjust this to a percentage of the cores (threads) you would like to dedicate to BOINC

Ah yeah, that makes sense now. Thanks for the education. All good. I'll leave it setup as is.

Cheers,
