Absolutely. I'm definitely going to drop the project the moment I get the badge I want. I hope others will do the same.

I estimate 36 calendar days for a ten year badge, not looking to good. So do us poor cpu challenged guys a solid and move on to something else once you've reach your goal; I'm gonna ![]() Same here but for me, I'm now 9 years and 9 days, I estimate around 50 days 24/24 to reach the 10 years badge and as soon as I reach that goal, I hope and cross my fingers, I abort all the remaining tasks and move to another one. I'm really sad because I stopped FAAH months ago to make Mapping Cancer Markers 5 years badge and I was running uncovering genorme mysteries & ebola, because when I was looking at the charts: http://s137.photobucket.com/user/Sekerob/medi...GYearsPi1Project.png.html It was indicating FAAH time to the end around 2,4 years. So I told myself, no need to worry, try to get minim 2 years with others and aim to the 5 years badge, your FAAH will not vanish before a long long time. So I stopped FAAH months ago at 8 years and 330 days. Then at the beginning of may, I look in forums and discover an horror, a thread of february speaking of the end of FAAH, close to finalize everything!!!! So believe me, since beginning of May, I removed all others project in my list and concentrate only on FAAH 24/24 on my unique computer intel 860, 4 cores, 8 logics. I can achieve at best something like 100 days per 15 calendars days. But if I use heavily my machine, I can do much less like 60-70 days. I don't know if I can reach the 10 years badge, I'm afraid I can't, I need up to end of june, maybe beginning of July. This is why I'm so angry, maybe missing a badge for a couple of days/weeks, when I had all the time in the world months ago to quietly get it. I was mislead by the charts. Anyway, I wish good luck to me ![]() Everyday I look at my results and say "ohh sh*t come on COME ON!!!" lol |

Sorry, how representing the 'official' percentages and extrapolating from that the remaining time 'mislead you, but if that's what it did, c'est la vie. E.g. around late November it was readjusted to 89% [400 days], then late February the percent was restated again as 78% [950 days] and then middle April is went to 99% to 100% to 98%. Feel free to blame it on the sun. too ;>)

Microsoft's Azure gives a free trial cloud computing worth $ 200, enough for 4 cores for about 1 month. |

I've rented a couple of i7-980x (6+6 cores, 24 GB RAM) for 35€/month. I can quit them on a monthly basis. No setup fee will be charged.

Since OET seems to be stable (no taks are commited to other platform kind of messages), I have removed FAVH. So 5 cores have been removed from the project, meaning around 100+ tasks per day.

This is why I'm so angry, maybe missing a badge for a couple of days/weeks, when I had all the time in the world months ago to quietly get it. I was mislead by the charts.. The crunching charts are made by volunteers based on information provided by WCG staff and project scientists. They are only as good as the information provided. For example, the charts for MCM1 are based on this posting: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ead,36146_offset,0#445500 How precise does this "estimate" seem to be? As Sekerob once said on one of his charts "Staring at this chart and crystal ball in the background can cause mild to considerable discomfort." |

Contrary to the prevalent attitude here which seems to be 'too f***ing bad', I understand how you feel and agree that if stats are going to be provided, which they should be, we should be able to rely on their accuracy. The badge system is designed to motivate people but god forbid anyone should get upset about the fact that the stats we rely upon to apportion work loads in pursuit of that goal are neither accurate or consistent. Criticism, whether constructive or not is not something anyone here seems to appreciate. And the powers that be wonder why we keep losing people - DUH! Anyway, I had assumed that I had just been caught off guard and that's why I needed to scramble. I don't normally pay attention to the statistics so I figured it was my fault. It's nice to know that it wouldn't have made any difference. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

With open ended projects there's slways going to be the point where the decision to 'end' has to be taken. That decision was made, not to add further experiments. If that is an issue, so be it.,

I'm sure some justification will always be found for WCG and how they act - or in this case, don't act. That's a theme that has long since become rather tedious.
----------------------------------------But let's assume that the project scientists are in fact to blame for the lack of notice. If that's the case, then I really can't think of any excuse for not giving the us, the volunteers they rely upon, as much advance notice as possible. Changing the status so dramatically 6 weeks before the project is slated to end isn't what I consider advance notice. If the project researchers aren't aware of the issues this causes then that is information it is incumbent upon WCG to provide. If the researchers don't care, that's fine too. That's something each of us can take into consideration the next time they want us to donate our time, electricity and resources to something that they think is important. It's one thing to be altruistic and offer to help with these sorts of projects. It's something else when the people asking for your help aren't capable of some common courtesy. ![]() ![]() |
