Re: Last available batch today ??

This is why I'm so angry, maybe missing a badge for a couple of days/weeks, when I had all the time in the world months ago to quietly get it.

I was mislead by the charts.

Anyway, I wish good luck to me biggrin and to all others crunchers in my position.

Everyday I look at my results and say "ohh sh*t come on COME ON!!!" lol

If you're so angry, stop crunching FAAH now to give others more tasks wink or ....
.... hire some cores in the cloud.
Microsoft's Azure gives a free trial cloud computing worth $ 200, enough for 4 cores for about 1 month.

It only gives 2 core for that price of 150€...
For 4 cores you have to pay extra! wink

Probably would go for 4 cores, after 2 core-machine gets a week of good results! ;)

Re: Last available batch today ??

Given that FA@H was a very long term project, it might be a good idea on the part of WCG to start thinking about [if not done already], to inform the 'exclusive' crunchers with a mail on the impending end and what's to follow, praising of course themselves heavenwards on the other researches for which 'idle' computing time can be contributed. Somehow see a dip in total work processed, bigger if left with inaction.

peace

Re: Last available batch today ??

Hi dango and others,

I live (and crunch) in the UK, where electricity prices are quite high, partially because of enforced subsidies for expensive renewable electricity to meet climate change obligations. I run a modest i3 laptop with 2 cores and a 65 watt transformer / adaptor. If I use the laptop to crunch 24 * 7, the monthly cost of electricity would be:

(65 watts * 24 hours/day * 365 days per year / 12 months per year * 11.3 pence / KwH) + 5% Value Added Tax

= 5-63 GBP / month

Now if I rent a couple of cores from vexxhost for 5 USD / month it is cheaper than paying for the electricity for my laptop (assuming that they are happy to accept UK customers, there are no additional charges and my bank doesn't charge me extortionate fees to pay the monthly fees in USD.

Clearly, I am able to use my laptop for other work when it is switched on, so effectively I can crunch on the laptop free of charge during those times. However it would be cheaper to crunch on the laptop only when I am using it for other work, and to pay for cloud computing overnight when I am asleep, rather than running the laptop 24 * 7. Also there would be less wear and tear on the laptop because I am not using it 24 * 7.

Which brings me on to the main point of this note if this applies to me as a domestic customer paying for my own electricity, it will apply to nearly every WCG cruncher in the UK. So there must be a small business opportunity for one of the WCG US citizens to negotiate a referral scheme with a cloud computing company and that person would receive a kick back for every person who took up cloud computing with vexxhost or another provider perhaps in return for offering modest help / advice with BOINC set up etc.

Any interest or takers, please?

I don't think that the laptop draws 65w at all times if that is the max output from the charger. It would ot be very wise to run a power adaptor at its max rating all of the time. 65w must be eough also for the case when there is gpu load for instance (which wcg currently does not utilize). Also, even if there is 100% cpu and gpu load, the charger should still have enough spare power to charge an empty battery.

Here in Sweden we also have high electricity prices plus there is a high VAT rate an then there is tax on that VAT tax as well as the electricity cost (which also has a tax for renewable energy). :\

Thanks flodisar - I hadn't considered that 65 watts would be the maximum load.

you are right...for 6 months of extra calculating, came a bill of 250€ in Croatia...it's just too much!

so I had retired my 2 machines...and rented u dual-Xeon on:
Azure Microsoft cloud - 30day FREE
Google cloud - 60day FREE

will check the vexhost for the hosting later on! ;)

Sure, anytime :-)
For the fun of it, see if you can get hold of a wattmeter and plug it in between the outlet andthe ac adapter. They are widely available and I‘d guess you should be able to pick one up for £10-£15. After a day of 24/7 wcg crunching you should have a pretty decent number on the kWh used. Then extrapolate that into a year of crunching and voila! :-)

Re: Last available batch today ??

Hello
I have an Acer i3 laptop and BOINC agent set to 60% load. Acording to my power meter my laptop consumes 16w( with the screen closed and only running BOINC), and 22w with the screen light and web surfing.
Best regards from Romania.
