Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

Hi,

I just purchased a MK809IV Quad Core RK3188 Android Mini PC, and I was excited to start computing with it, but I'm really having a lot of issues getting it set up with regards to the BOINC app thinking it's a phone. It keeps wanting me to plug it in to charge the battery, but of course this is a mini-pc, so there's no battery to charge. Additionally, the app wants me to turn off the screen to start computing, and here we go again with it not being a phone. I should point out that I'm presently running BOINC on my HTC One M7, so perhaps I haven't set things up correctly for BOINC to even recognize it.

Halp...I'm floundering here pulling my hair out on how to get things working if it's even possible.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

There was past discussion about Battery-less devices and BOINC on Android that needed to be overcome. For sure in the preferences you can set the powersources in the advanced section. Play with those. Also look at the minimum battery level. Set that to zero if possible.

Edit: Just checked, battery level can be set to zero.

As for the screen, there's a setting too, untick the Pause when screen is on.

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

Thanks so much for getting back to me about this! smile

What about setting it up on this site? The site doesn't seem to recognize it like it did for my phone. Perhaps I'm not setting it up correctly or naming it right.

Thanks again for all the help.

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

Until the device has successfully communicated with WCG, it will not show up on the website device manager. Has it, does it?

Opposed to regular computers, Androids will only pick up on settings for the project selection on the website. All other preferences have to be set on the device [limited options to keep it as KISS as possible.]

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

I've made all the changes that you've suggested, and the program has downloaded work, but no work has been computed. I have the message in blue at the bottom of my TV that says "Connect Your Device to a Charger to Continue Computing". I've tried putting the computer in "Stand-by" mode, but no work has been computed. Additionally, the website doesn't seem to recognize the new device, but it still sees my phone, and of course my home computer.

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

What Android and BOINC version are on your mini-PC?

In the 7.4.41 client, under advanced preferences there's the power sources option. There are 4 on mine, Wall Socket, USB Connection, Wireless Charger, Battery, latter probably not on yours, possibly not even wireless charger. Play with these sources.

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

I have Kit Kat, and it's the latest version of BOINC. I do have all those options, but I haven't hit upon the right one that will get rid of the "Connect Your Device to a Charger to Continue Computing" message. I have the distinct impression that BOINC will have to update the client to take into consideration the new technologies like mini-pc's such as mine. I'm going to hit them up to see if they can maybe even have a simple option to let the program know it's a mini-pc, and not a phone so that it'll ignore all messages like the connecting my charger, etc. Thanks so much for all your help.

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

Someone else had all 4 power boxes too, but some he could not tick [grayed out].

'Latest' is rather ambiguous in OS and BOINC world... before you blink the next release has been pushed, which is why we like the actual version number printed. KitKat last I saw was on my device like 4.4.5 before going to Lollipop, now 5.1.1, but other brands can be months or ages behind. Often they prevent in cases the updating, so people are 'forced' into upgrading to newer hardware.

Sure hit the devs... maybe now the total control from Berkeley has been relinquished to project governance, we might see more fixes pop up. For Mac a build certifier has volunteered, but who is going to this for the other platforms is unsure. To get a new app onto Playstore some official stuff needs doing. I've already unticked auto-update for the app, to maintain full control on what version gets loaded... first check it out ;P

Re: Issues with a new Android Mini-PC

Hi Rob,

Yes, I have 7.4.41 and Kit Kat version is 4.4.2.

Thanks again for all the help, and hopefully the devs will listen. All I can do is try, eh?
