Never thought to see the day any comp of mine would not make the 1st checkpoint in 18 hours, but here it is:
Result Log Result Name: E232457_ 709_ S.298.C31H22N6O6.AERJRIPFZMNSEV-UHFFFAOYSA-N.2_ s1_ 14_ 0-- <core_client_version>7.6.3</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <stderr_txt> INFO: No state to restore. Start from the beginning. [12:03:00] Number of jobs = 8 [12:03:00] Starting job 0,CPU time has been restored to 0.000000. Killing job because cpu time has been exceeded. Subjob start time = 0, Subjob current time = 0 [07:10:58] Finished Job #0 07:11:00 (9764): called boinc_finish </stderr_txt> ]]> The question is: Is it invalid or is it error? ValidationState and Outcome contradict in their description. Maybe we [the volunteers], are ready for proposing that a 24 hour cutoff would be the next needed step in this sciences' research evolution. |

Personally, I wouldn't care whether a wu needs 18, 24, 48, ... hrs to complete.
----------------------------------------RNA World for example has wu that need more than 180 days to complete. Or some primegrid wu need a couple of days. |

The biggest problem with super long WU's like that on the grid is that they would probably still have the same number of checkpoints (since each one is after a discrete task finishes). So if it took 30 hours to complete, that first checkpoint might not happen for 12 hours (since the first job is always the longest IIRC). This would cause even bigger issues for people without 24/7 machines and could lead to tasks never being finished.
Since the project is already opt in, it might be fine, but there are probably quick a few people that check the box for it without realizing how intensive it is. Although longer times will probably become necessary at some point anyway as the molecules keep getting bigger and bigger |

I wouldn't have a problem with longer run time cutoffs. I only had that one this year that I discussed. Longer cutoffs wouldn't be a problem, if WCG made it an "opt-in option" (by another check box, ie.) (I can read uplinger's thoughts -- "Oh, no!!! Not more programming".)

@cleanenergy, just read about Intel giving 50 million to Delft TH to further development of a quantum computer + sharing their know-how. Maybe that's needed. Meantime had another 18 hour, no checkpoint reached result binned, so unticked CEP2. Opposed to the USA guzzling, power here is made very expensive to make people think twice about their carbon footprint [and I agree with the principle, else BAU will continue].
----------------------------------------Edit: And a very close shave to getting unticked from the profile on which my fastest is... first checkpoint after 16+ hours: 7.00 cep2 E232559_83_S.302.C38H30N4O2.WUWKFCYAVDKFAS-UHFFFAOYSA-N.14_s1_14_0 16:34:42 (16:18:35) 98,38 90,610 02:09:37 07d,20:10:31 9/2/2015 3:41:08 PM [1] 00:12:14 Running 3113135 135.37 MB 274.86 MB Anyone taking questions, or are all lines closed :?
