Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

All mine totally extinguish when hibernate has completed [memory image written to HD/SSD/Flash... truly zero-power consuming state. Opposed, on sleep one has a perpetual blinking power-on switch... the memory state is maintained and uses thus power, but you get near immediate resume for that.

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

Hi Rob:

Last night, I put my laptop into sleep mode.

This morning I discovered that with regards to the seven CEP WUs with no checkpoints, I am back to square one. So in effect, I have no results to show for over 12 hours of CPU time! If I were a new cruncher, I would be having second thoughts about volunteering in this project. It is wonderful that WCG has a 25% increase in volunteer crunchers but how many of them are going to stay on when they encounter experiences like this?

Is it difficult to install checkpoints in these large files? Am I and other crunchers going to have run our PCs 24/7 to deal with this issue?

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

On sleep and hibernate you'd have an uninterrupted event log [Ctrl+Shft+E]. Post a copy from before the sleep call to well after where you see the progress drop back to zero. [I know the likely answer].

As mitigator, before calling sleep put BOINC in suspend. After system is up again, take BOINC back to active, of course noting that LAIM has to be *on*, just to be double sure.

Remember, sleep does not secure anything, hibernate does.

Re: No Checkpoint happening...?

Hi Rob:

Thank you for helping me out with this technical issue. I am no longer losing a previous day's work when I boot my laptop up in the morning. It was frustrating to me to see this happening due to a lack of checkpoints.

May I make a suggestion?

Put your technical advice at the beginning of the CEP2 section of the WCG website so that other crunchers will make the necessary configuration changes so that they do not encounter the issue like I did. I am sure that there are other crunchers out there who are doing a slow boil out there over the lack of checkpoints.
