End of BOINC development

Hi All,

Sorry, I expect there are other threads along this vein, but I didn't find them after a short look.

The team that develops BOINC lost their NSF funding in mid-2015 and immediately turned BOINC over to community development. At the time, they seemed confident that the community would rise to the challenge. Yet witness that the last stable update to BOINC was... mid-2015.

What is WCG's plan to provide the necessary development of the next generation of distributed computing? From where I sit, the road ahead is very dark indeed.

At this point, I'm wondering if I should convert my operation over to Bitcoin mining and simply donate the revenue to research in the public interest.

Re: End of BOINC development

When I hear this from BOINC, it will be a whole lot more credible.

Re: End of BOINC development

jonasavory - it's not 'the end of the world yet'....

WCG have always taken and slightly customised the BOINC source code, checking and compiling it themselves - so the version that we're currently running with, will be around for quite some time. Also, I'm sure that I've seen other threads/discussions stating that some development work is on-going (if I remember rightly, there's a specific BOINC chatroom somewhere - so, have a search for that).

Re: End of BOINC development

Recommended version was 7.6.33, which is posted here:
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
On Jun 2016.

It's the Linux version which was halted at 7.4 from 2014...but that one is mostly community based!

And, this just in, too:

Three things bother me:
ONE:
"Linux on ARM" (Not Android!) is not further along
by all the projects (including WCG) using BOINC.
Some have claims of offering it, or for
Raspberry Pi (RPi) specifically. However,
over 12 Million RPis have been sold, and this
from a UK charity only Five years old! I project
hundreds of millions of these and similar ARM boards
being sold to "ordinary folks".

TWO:
Arch Linux GUI user environments "out-of-the-box"
are not further along on ARM boards, including RPi.
All those "ordinary folks" don't know they need Arch,
so they flock to Ubuntu, etc, for
Lack of Choice between Debian or Arch based
Linux GUI user environments.

THREE:
https://www.stellar.org/
Lack of a Stellar based "computer money" choice
as reward/incentive for "community computing".

Re: End of BOINC development

@gb009761 - I would actually like to hear more about how WCG customizes BOINC (other than the obvious visual branding). But it's worth noting that WCG does not customize BOINC for Android. Because of this, finding the proper software on Android via the Google Play Store is, for the newbie, confusing. In my opinion.
