Hello there.
----------------------------------------I'm currently running 3 android devices in the WCG project. A galaxy s8, moto g 5 plus and s4. How can I differentiate which device is which on the WCG website? I get android and a bunch of numbers after it without being able to see the actual model number of the device. I'm also not sure how to read into this CPU time and elapsed - is that the time it took to complete the task vs the time it was given? Also does anyone know a good app on android to track clock speeds over time and make sure I'm not throttling? In the background, not on full display. And finally, on octa-core processors, what do folks feel is the best balance of performance and higher clock speeds? thanks for any input!

The native BOINC app allows you to name the device. I installed that on my last android phone I got and its the only one that doesn't show up as you described in WUProp devices. It can also be tracked with BOINC Tasks. Not sure it has the battery temp options though.

I don't know anything about the MOTO, but if the S8 runs all 8 CPU's you will see about 6.5 to 7.0 days runtime/24 hr elapsed time. 16,000 points and 52 results on average. The S4 will only show 3.3 to 3.6 days runtime/24 hr elapsed time. Running all 8 processors @ 100% and 100% RAM requires cooling, i.e. a laptop cooler.

Okay, what exactly does this mean. 6.5 to 7.0 days runtime/24 hr elapsed time. Every 6 days will be a full 24 hour period of runtime because of thermal throttling? 16000 points per day, on average? Also, just a note to boinc developers out there. Talkback on android doesn't read everything. It constantly repeats the same thing because of refreshing screens and I end up copying last utterance to clipboard and pasting it somewhere. Regardless, I get no estimated remaining time, only a percentage each time so it is hard to know what is what. This is similar to how CPUZ acts and I must say it is frustrating. PS: I'm not seeing where to name the specific device under the native boinc app - am I missing something? S8 doesn't seem to be getting too warm - s4 on the other hand gets quite toasty and I think it is likely that the phone is holding back because of battery temps. Moto g 5 plus is running a snapdragon 625 and seems to be holding its own. I don't have any of these phones running 100% ram though I am tempted to bring the CPU time down to 75. Though, in actuality, this seems to simply bring the CPU usage down to 75% - I'm really not sure if either one of these - CPU usage or CPU time really do that much different or am I reading this wrong?

It means that for every calendar day you run your octocore (assuming 100% use, 24 hours of the day), you will average about 6.5-7 days of runtime on WCG. Sometimes this will be higher, sometimes lower. Depends on the workunits, and if you have a wingman, when they submit theirs and yours gets validated. Also if you are using the device, that will take away from the processing time as BOINC gives up processor usage when the device is busy. Also, just a note to boinc developers out there. Never used talkback, so I don't know how to help with that. BOINC has not been very actively developed for some time, so no major improvements have come in a while. Although I believe there is a push to jumpstart development. PS: I'm not seeing where to name the specific device under the native boinc app - am I missing something? If you lower the available cpus on your quad from say 4 cores to 3, it will help with temps. Batteries don't like heat, and some devices can get very hot. I have had phones in the past that the batteries ballooned up, basically forcing the back of the phone off, even if it was non-removable. If the devices are only being used for crunching, putting them near a good cooling solution is a very good idea. As mentioned above, a laptop cooler would work. I have 4 or 5 devices set to charge on a charging station and have them propped up and a 120mm case fan blowing air between them. Keeps them nice and cool ![]() |

Using the RESULTS API it's relatively easy to cross-reference the same-named Android devices on the device statistics pages with the results.
NATIVE BOINC does NOT run on Android with OS version 5 and up (latest is now v8, Oreo) i.e. not of use to many. Though rumor had it a newer build was coming, it's remained just rumor. |

Ah, I've only tried on an older 4.x Android Phone and I only got it setup the one. I think all the rest are 4.x as well besides the Nexus 9. ![]() |

I'm running native boinc on 3 devices - one running 5.0.1 and 2 7.0.

hmmmm, the playstore says its 4.4.2 of 2013-09-09, then when installed it says "Version to Install: 0.5.9.5, and news saying New Boinc Client was recompiled with newest libs 1.0.1 and libCurl 7.40.0 dated 2015-02-10 and when installed in the about box it says it's 4.4.2.3.b, but anyway, what is now coming to my Android is seemingly not crashing i.e. Android PIE 5.0 and up enforced compatible.
