Interesting News Articles About Microbiome

The Microbiome as a Novel Paradigm in Studying Stress and Mental Health

Richard T. Liu, of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Bradley Hospital, East Providence, Rhode Island has published an interesting article discussing at the intersection between neuroscience, microbiology, and psychiatry, the enteric microbiome has potential to become a novel paradigm for studying the psychological underpinnings of mental illness.

"Thousands of new microbial communities identified in human body"

A new study of the human microbiome—the trillions of microbial organisms that live on and within our bodies—has analyzed thousands of new measurements of microbial communities from the gut, skin, mouth, and vaginal microbiome, yielding new insights into the role these microbes play in human health. The study, from researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and University of Maryland School of Medicine, presents a three-fold expansion of data from the National Institutes of Health Human Microbiome Project, providing unprecedented depth and detail about human microbial diversity

Re: Interesting News Articles About Microbiome

This is a news article on the above-listed journal article from Nature.

In the Earth Microbiome Project, an extensive global team has collected more than 27,00 samples from numerous diverse environments around the globe. They analyzed the unique collections of microbes-the microbiomes-living in each sample to generate the first reference database of bacteria colonizing the planet.

Unlocking the Secrets of the Microbiome

Jane E. Brody has an article in the New York Times Personal Health Section on November 6, 2017.

Restoring the proper balance of microscopic organisms in every organ is perhaps the most promising yet challenging task of modern medicine.

Powerful new method for microbiome analysis developed

Scientists from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Sema4, and collaborating institutions New York University and the University of Florida published a report detailing their new more accurate method for identifying individual microbial species and strains in a community. This new approach can identify antibiotic resistance and virulence markers missed by conventional techniques, report scientists.

Vaginal microbiome influences women's risk of sexually transmitted infections.

'The lack of lactobacillus in the vagina increases the susceptibility to sexually transmitted infection, including HIV, chlamydia, candida, gonorrhea and so on.'

Unlike the healthy gut which hosts many bacterial species, a healthy vagina essentially has a monoculture of lactobacillus.

Probiotic containing lactobacillus reuteri provides relief for some babies with colic.

'An international study led by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute found the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri could reduce crying in breast-fed babies less than three months old.

Researchers found that compared to a placebo, the probiotic group was two times more likely to reduce crying by 50 per cent after three weeks of treatment, but only in babies who were exclusively breastfed. The latest study, published in the journal Pediatrics, collected data from four big trials in Italy, Poland, Canada and Australia.'

The emphasis on "breast fed' seems to be that it wasn't tested on infants on formula, not whether it does or doesn't work on them. The organism is available in commercially available products.

Women’s bladders brim with never-before-seen viruses that can kill bacteria

"'In a wee survey, Loyola University Chicago researchers found the sac-like organ brimming with never-before-seen viruses that can kill and manipulate bacteria. Their findings, published this week in the Journal of Bacteriology, offer a first-pass catalogue of the rich diversity of bacteria-infecting viruses—aka “phages” or “bacteriophages”—in the bladder microbiome. The researchers suggest that further studies into the streaming viral content could one day lead to phage-based methods to void bacterial infections and identify disorders.'

“The thought that there’s not bacteria in urine is false,” Catherine Putonti told Ars straight away. Putonti, a bioinformatics researcher and microbiologist at Loyola, is the leading author of the study. “The big picture is that there are a lot of viruses that are part of these bacterial communities as well.”

Gut Microbes Combine to Cause Colon Cancer, Study Suggests

Two types of bacteria commonly found in the gut work together to fuel the growth of colon tumors, researchers reported Thursday.

Their study, published in the journal Science, describes what may be a hidden cause of colon cancer, the third most common cancer in the United States. The research also adds to growing evidence that gut bacteria modify the body's immune system in unexpected and sometimes deadly ways.
