now downloading BOINC + Virtual box and running "repair" option - fingers crossed!
(would still like to know just what the heck went bad) |

Usually on first BOINC install as service a boot is required to initiate the special limited access boinc manager account. The message suggest you have not, though there would have been a prompt at end of the installation.

thanks for quick reply - the problem is that I have been running BOINC for years with very few problems - and all was going smoothly until I finished messing about with Icloud and a couple of allegedly "free" utilities for copying contact details from a Samsung phone to an Iphone (GRRR) ... but that's another story!
----------------------------------------What I found totally weird, when I tried to rerun the installer in "repair" mode, was these odd error messages that popped up - here's another one for you! ![]() and when I cleared that, the installer just hung on this screen until I used task manager to end it ![]() finally opted for "uninstall" option and the re-installed from scratch (and all is now OK) - but in over 20 years of messing with computers and websites, I never saw a mess like that before! I normally have a lot of fun - see here - www.grumpyoldgits.org FOOTNOTE ... being a suspicious sort of bloke, I ran Adwcleaner and found 5 PUPs that were not there before! Not sure if they came from the Icloud app, or either of the "free" utilities that I tried earlier [Edit 1 times, last edit by poolekiteman at Nov 27, 2017 7:54:05 AM] |
