Hello.
I brought my issue to the main BOINC forums, but despite a few good attempts, we haven't identified the solution yet. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=12111 Marked as High Priority because there's a deadline. This isn't my computer - a relative has pledged money to run a 32 core threadripper on VINA tasks, on the latest version of Ubuntu, 24/7. I've assembled the system and will be delivering it on Friday, December 8th. So far the system is averaging about 860 tasks a day. Would be a crying shame if they pulled the plug because they couldn't see it doing anything. Thanks in advance, Dayle |

Where you got your BOINC from? (Ubuntu repository, Berkeley .sh, LocutusofBorg ppa, my long time preferred).
----------------------------------------Edit: The gui_rpc_auth.cfg does not contain a password under Ubuntu/Debian, so the connect is by entering localhost, or 127.0.0.1 and leaving the PW field blank, then enter. Also, some files in /var/lib/boinc-client/ are in fact symlinks from a user editable location. [Edit 1 times, last edit by SekeRob* at Nov 30, 2017 4:48:43 PM] |

Often when your computer crashes a file called ".BOINC Manager" could still be lingering around in your $HOME-directory. That file acts as a personal lockfile and in that case boincmgr won't start its GUI.
----------------------------------------EDIT: If you re-install your $HOME-directory, containing the ".BOINC Manager" file, this explains why the personal lockfile is still present. [Edit 1 times, last edit by adriverhoef at Nov 30, 2017 7:28:16 PM] |

Thanks SekeRob and Adriverhoef, you were both very helpful.
I got my BOINC from the "Ubuntu Software" icon. As far as I know, that's identical to, or a GUI front for the repository. Anyway it's running version 7.8.3. The BOINC website shows 7.2.42 as the latest version for Linux 64, with my newer version number being Windows only. I assume the repository was updated and the official website hasn't been updated. I deleted my lockfile and opened BOINC. Immediately the manager came up, although with no running content. I closed and reopened it, and it's restored like new. THANK YOU THANK YOU!! Now I gotta figure out what lockfiles are. More importantly, can anybody guess why one was created during a normal shutdown? Clicking on the power icon, then clicking shutdown shouldn't count as a crash. Thanks again! |

I have also run into the same problem on a Linux Mint 64 Sarah. It foes not occur all the time, but only intermittently. My work around has been to open Boinc Manager as an administrator. This always works. After a shutdown and restart Boinc Manager more often than not will open normally.this behavior has only occurred on one machine, a 2600K. This has not been a big problem, just annoying.
----------------------------------------Cheers

Experiment: When having a blank tasks view, and right hand bottom shows a connection to a running client, toggle the 'Show active tasks' button, though it's possible if nothing is showing to run or ready to start, the button is grayed.

I had the same problem on Linux Mint.
----------------------------------------It doesn't happen if I always close Boinc Manager properly before rebooting. Also if it does not come up, it should come up if you open a terminal and try 'gksudo boinc-manager'. ![]() |

SekeRob, I just restarted the rig to install an update. Toggled the 'show all' button on a blank Manager, no effect.
Roundfour, is there an improper way to close Boinc Manager? |

Well, just rebooting without closing it first.
----------------------------------------That leads to not opening anymore after reboot (at least for me). ![]() |

As was shared on the Berkeley forums, improper shutdown on Linux could leave a lockfile behind which then prevents the opening of a new BOINC Manager instance.
