Sorry, rant time for me. Would love some advice or opinions. I may be looking in the wrong place, but here goes.
----------------------------------------Truly disappointed in this Dell XPS8930. I may be looking at the Inspiron gaming, which has a slightly bigger case and comes with the Ryzen 7-1700X. That same processor alone in Canada is costing $500 plus on its own. With Intel, I can get an i7-8700 for $420 but then I pay $200+ for the motherboard if I custom build. We're not even adding in graphics cards, which have gotten to the point of sheer ridiculousness - $400 plus for a GTX1060 seems steep. I could always go AMD to cut back a little, though, but now with bitcoin mining they seem to be rising or out of stock. Likewise, $300 for 16 GB DDR4 ram compared to $150 for DDR3 a few years ago. Does anyone have any experience with these? I have an XPS-8930 right now with said i7. It's stupidly loud. It's like sitting in the same room as a mildly quiet vacuum. I think it's because of the small case and, as far as Intel goes, they came out with something way too quick. The fact I need a new motherboard, the fact it has to be a motherboard that supports overclocking even though I have no interest in it and therefore is the most expensive and that they seemingly increased heat by a ton is why I'd like to go AMD. This processor, right now, despite having a TDP of 65W, is sitting right around 97W according to core temp and HWInfo. And hitting 80+ c. I understand this is probably Dell's fault, but the fact that last year in the XPS 8920 with an i7-7700 it didn't reach past 48W and heat stayed around 65-70C this is, to put no fine a point on it, frustrating. I can make it quiet down a lot by using power saver, which throttles the CPU down to 3.8 ghz and brings the watts down to about 60. When I spend this much cash on a machine I'd like it to be usable to its full potential, though. So with all of that out of the way - does anyone have any prebuilt Ryzen systems that they have seen recently? HP Omen seems nice, but the options are either far too high end or low end. I wish I could configure it more on the Canadian site - though boxing day deals are coming up, so you never know. Apart from that, there's really nothing around that I can see with either Ryzen or the new Intel coffee lake apart from Dell. Any help is much appreciated. I may end up playing the waiting game - again. Much as I hate to.

I read a couple of reviews on this machine and they say the fans are loud. Probably not a lot you can do about that except maybe put in some aftermarket fan. You might increase the air intake area of the case to allow greater airflow, but not knowing your full setup, that might be iffy. I don't know if they come with any on board graphics, but all you need the graphics card for is to run the monitor, unless you are into gaming or run projects which use graphic cards. That being the case I would use the on board graphics if available or the cheapest graphics card I could find which would work. If the graphics card was bundled, I guess you live with what you bought.
----------------------------------------Personally, I would stay away from any bleeding edge machines until the kinks get worked out. I agree you probably spent a good deal of cash on this machine, so I hope you can make it work to your satisfaction. Good luck. Cheers

I have bought Dell before, but have bought custom configured machines from Portatech the last couple of machines. I already had keyboard, mouse, disk and GPU, so I ordered their "bare-bones" system configured without them. I added liquid cooling and higher speed memory. I have not had any problems, but I expect their support is thin.

This processor, right now, despite having a TDP of 65W, is sitting right around 97W according to core temp and HWInfo. And hitting 80+ c. I think all the new processors tend to exceed their published power ratings. But for efficiency, I think the Ryzen 1700 is about the best. There are certain power-conservation features that you lose on the 1700x and 1800x. Also, I have heard that you should not overclock the 1700, or it disables the power-saving features. At any rate, my 1700 is running 15 cores on MCM and MIP (with one core reserved to support a GPU on Folding), and "CPUTIN", which is an Ubuntu temperature measurement on the board I believe, shows at 56 C. The internal temperature would be somewhat higher, but the stock cooling fan does OK and is quiet enough for me. I built this machine, and don't know about pre-built systems, but that is what I would look for. The new Ryzen+, out in Feb or March, is a 12 nm chip (instead of 14 nm), and should be a little more efficient. |

You'll need a good aftermarket cooler for 24/7 crunching. Most prebuilt machines are simply not made to be used at 100% on a continuous basis except for some gaming and server builds. I use Hyper 212 coolers on my CPU's except for my HTPC which runs a stock cooler but its a very efficient 65 watt CPU and only runs 2/4 threads.

The new Ryzen+, out in Feb or March, is a 12 nm chip (instead of 14 nm), and should be a little more efficient. I found a lenovo Legion y720 with a Ryzen 1800X. Much larger tower so hoping that cooling will be more efficient. Keep in mind I'm in Canada, so shipping something over from the US is insanely expensive. This Lenovo is $450 off and, even with a 4 tb hard drive meant to replace the 1 tb inside of it is still cheaper than this xps. I'm assuming you're running linux. Would there be a huge difference in PPD between Linux and windows? How many are you currently getting with your 1700? And I'm just assuming that the new Ryzen is going to be AM4 compatible? Thanks for the input so far. I can't find any reviews on this machine which is leaving me a little worried. Unlike the dell, this seems like a full sized case so I'm assuming it will use 120 MM fans? Opened the xps up today and it appears it's using 80 MM and 92, respectively. Keep in mind it's probably been 5 years since I've had a new desktop, but 120 was the standard for good cooling and decently quiet. At this point anything is going to walk all over my fx8350, though. Regardless if AMD isn't getting the IPC of Intel, it has enough threads to keep up? I think benchmarks only go so far.

I feel your pain wolfman1360. So are you looking for a second machine to buy and just gonna keep the vacuum you have?
----------------------------------------Also -- and I'm guilty of this too -- TDP heat output isn't an accurate way to gauge how much power a CPU will use. I'm just now changing my thinking. I've personally been playing the waiting game for several years. I'm waiting for Intel's 10nm Cannonlake CPUs to come out in 2018. I just hope they come out sooner than later, since I really need a new machine.

Whoa! Apparently that was my first post on this forum! I'm confusing the WCG forums with the old grid.org/United Devices forums where I was pretty active back in 2005-2006. Didn't know I haven't posted on WCG at all.

In 5 more years I'm sure we'll have fanless 40 w 12 core processors. As far as tdp goes, I guess laptops and desktops are different? My 15 W i7-6700u will crank itself up to 3.1 ghz and use 19 watts for 30 seconds or so then clock down to 2.8 and use 15. I think Intel jumped the gun way too quick on these processors. The 15 w quad core i7's are coming nowhere near the 4 ghz that they claim so who knows. Haven't heard anything on the Ryzen mobile side of things, though.
