AMD Epyc is Here! 32 core /64 thread in 1 CPU!

AMD is coming back in a big way with their new Epyc server chips. You didn't think it was actually gonna be affordable, did you?

32 core / 64 thread monster now available for purchase. Imagine these in a 2p config, if that's even possible.

In the Newegg ad it lists the the processor as 1P. If that is accurate, then a 2P or 4P configuration may be in a different iteration of the chip. I can not imagine they would stop at a single processor configuration.
If the past trends hold true, then an entire used server would be under $200 US in 5 years. It would be nice to score one of these and see how it performs.
Cheers

Re: AMD Epyc is Here! 32 core /64 thread on 1 CPU die!

Looks like they've updated the website with several other offerings.

There are chips listed now for 2p configurations. The 32 core chips for 2p are $3699 and $4499 each, the Epyc 7551 and Epyc 7601.

Obviously for that price we'd just as soon find or build 2 or 3 used machines to equal that output and still be a lot less expensive. I'm fine with my 16 core 2p setups for now.

Re: AMD Epyc is Here! 32 core /64 thread on 1 CPU die!

Epyc is 4x Zen die on one chip, the same as Threadripper is 2x die on 1 chip (with 2 supposedly dead Zen die as spacers.)

Performance per core should be just like a slower clocked Ryzen chip.

The 7601 is the top Epyc chip

Re: AMD Epyc is Here! 32 core /64 thread on 1 CPU die!

Those chips are thirsty, having TDP's of 120 to 180 watts, requiring large amounts of cooling. Guess that can be expected with this many cores. I know with the past Opterons they tended to use most if not all of the TDP for heavy workloads, wonder if that's still the case with these Epyc's.

Intel's IIRC are usually somewhat under TDP in most situations even under workload.

the Epyc 7601 is $4,500 on NewEgg. The least expensive SP3 motherboard that showed up in my search is $649. you're going to need a serious cooling solution for sure . . . . would be fun, though.

I'd love to build a system with those.
Now I just need too much money :-0

The cooling solution required is dependent on the TDP. 180W can be done on Air. TR is can run at 180W as well and can be cooled by Air coolers. Water is preferred though. The important part with TR/Epyc is to get a solution where the cold plate covers 100% of the die surface. Since there are 4 die with space between them the surface area just needs to be bigger than typical monolithic CPUs.
