No gimmicks.
I've had one of my own for just under a year and that one device has contributed 97,029,174 points so far. MSRP was nearly a thousand not so long ago, and it's like 0.2 Ghz slower then the latest model. So an amazing deal for anybody looking for a cost-efficient cruncher build. https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-threadripper-1950x-deal,38097.html PC Part Picker shows compatible motherboards with a similarly generous discount. |

Wish I would've seen this earlier. I may have treated myself to an early Christmas present.

You can build a full Ryzen 1700x system for around $600 delivered if you build it yourself.
----------------------------------------If you can tolerate used on eBay, you can also buy dual XEON E5 (ES) Engineering Sample that will get you 48 threads for ~600 shipped including SuperMicro dual Mobo. Remember though, your biggest cost long-term will be electricity so getting a setup that has the best RAC to kW/h ratio will save you money long term. Yeah I already have a 1700 (non-x) that I built August 2017. Just getting the itch to build a new system and thought a TR would be a nice addition.

Back in stock for two more days at Newegg.
At the time of my posting Amazon has a discounted motherboard for $209. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074HC93RX/?tag=pcpapi-20 |

The motherboards for these rippers are ridiculously expensive.

It hit $409US on newegg ebay page. I had it in my cart and was so tempted to press purchase button, but will hold off until next year to build one. Maybe by then the 2900 series will start dropping. Zen2 (Ryzen 3?) looks like it will be a powerhouse, so that should push the Ryzen 1 and 2 series lower. Plus maybe more TR4 mobos will hit the market and start pushing prices down. The $209US board mentioned is the cheapest TR4 board I have seen so far. Along with RAM and SSDs dropping, and GPUs actually being affordable again, it looks like it will be a good year to build

Motherboards for Threadripper will always be more expensive because even the cheapest chips have 64 PCI-e Lanes.
----------------------------------------That means every motherboard has to be ready extreme use cases, especially a LOT of simultaneous, varied peripherals all sending data back and forth. The cheapest Threadripper motherboard assumes you might want to run an overclocked CPU, three graphics cards, eight sticks of RAM, and a dozen hard drives.
