So I just obtained an older dual 6128 HE. I know that SCC and a few other projects run better under linux but it appears those other projects ended.
----------------------------------------So - is SCC the only project that linux can really take advantage of at this point? Is there any other project that this CPU would be best able to handle? Right now, mapping cancer markers is sitting at 7 hours per task, for example, and that isn't sitting well with me when other machines average half that time, even under windows and even with spikes in CPU usage by other programs. Especially if there other projects that it could crunch quicker were better utilized. I don't like MIP using more than 4 cores as it seems to slow machines down even under linux - or is that only under windows? Sorry if I'm overcomplicating things. I just want this machine to be able to get as much work done for science. If other, newer processors can run MCM in half this time, have at it. I guess I shouldn't worry too much - this is 16 cores constantly running. Any thoughts appreciated. I'm completely new to Linux, even now - all I'm doing is installing the boinc client to run headless and allow remote access into my windows PC so I can administer it. I'm not sure what else I need. thanks again

SCC shouldn't be on its way out; I remember reading that they're sending new work soon (don't quote me on that)

Both SCC and ZIKA are the Vina projects which run much faster under Linux than Windows.

Written in the Smash Childhood Cancer project update - December 2018 thread:
----------------------------------------The project is absolutely not finishing in two weeks, or any time soon. The project bar completion rates bounce around if researchers run through one set of work units before sending us the next set(s). These researchers are definitely sending us more. On a more general note, now that OET is complete on WCG, none of the other projects are slated to end soon, either. Please take the project completion bars with a grain of salt. ![]() |

Thanks for the info guys.
----------------------------------------Just added these to my linux machines with the option to grab other projects if no work is available for the current ones.

Thanks for the info guys. Just added these to my linux machines with the option to grab other projects if no work is available for the current ones. I have run both of them and have never run out of work from either one. Cheers

Again - I'm very new to linux so are there any utilities folks find useful in conjunction with the boinc client? thanks

One difference I have found between Linux and Windows is that wi-fi is more reliable with Windows using the same hardware and position.
----------------------------------------I have a PC which I can dual boot into Windows 10 or Linux Mint 18. I do not remember a wi-fi failure on Windows. Linux Mint wi-fi is generally reliable and can go weeks without problems but then lose wi-fi 2 or 3 times in a day and the connection re-established manually.
