I already tried adding a shortcut to run automatically at startup (see my post 29 May) and that doesn't fix anything unless I run boincmgr.exe.
The process behaviour caused by boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe seems to differ as follows: - if I start boincmgr.exe manually (any way will do), WCG for Windows (32) shows up as a running app. If I close the window, that process disappears and Boinc Client (32) shows up under Background Processes, followed soon after by WCG for Windows (32) with a pause symbol on the icon. Screensaver from then on will behave as expected until I reboot the system. - if I start boinc.exe, for example by double-clicking, it opens the cmd window and appears as a Running Process in the Process Manager. If I close the cmd window, Boinc Client (32) disappears as a process. The screensaver no longer functions. There is something buggy about the way boinc.exe executes if you ask me. Yes, I've set for BOINC to pause when I'm at the PC, some of my work eats a lot of memory but I'm also away from the computers a lot so WCG still gets a good workout. |

--daemon switch in shortcut?
Ticked "Run Manager at login" under other options? Ticked "Run the Client" in same screen? Ticked Enable Manager exit dialog? When exiting boincmgr the dialog screen should show "Stop running tasks..." unticked. Anyway, you really really need to do the Contact.us for paid support, response time several days. |

PS C:\Program Files (x86)\BOINC> .\boinc.exe 13-Jun-2019 09:52:05 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.14.2 for windows_intelx86 You're running Windows 10 64-bit Home, but it looks like BOINC 32-bit is installed. I would uninstall that and install the 64-bit version of WCG/BOINC.

There seems to be nothing in the installter about choosing between either and I cannot find a download page for a 64-bit version?

Yeah right, there's separate installers you can get at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D Or you go to BOINC and click on the download link and it will detect which bit size the OS runs and offers the correct one https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
----------------------------------------edit: Do not click the virtual box version as you will be creating more problems for yourself than you already have. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 15, 2019 12:04:19 PM] |

Right so I grabbed said boinc installation file. That created that elusive boincmgr and boinctray processes in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
On system restart, the manager window started itself and after the timeout, the screensaver started as expected. Including after clicking away the manager. So thank you so far! Seems that the WCG installer is detecting the wrong system or installing 32 bit anyway. Perhaps someone should file a bug? |

Ok it's just gotten weird again. Everything worked fine for a week and then today, I'm back to the process not starting up again. I've changed nothing since, though Windows may have updated in the background. FWIW and this is just my own opinion garnered from more than 35 years of PC use and 10+ years of building them is that I NEVER EVER let windows auto update because that causes way too many issues. If there is one that is deemed super critical then I will look at it and judge accordingly and manual update if needed. A vast majority of the updates are for business/enterprise computers and will not benefit the home user PC at all. Windows 10 took too way much control away from the user and I will never use it under any circumstances but I understand that some have no choice. Again, JMHO. Try whatever you did to get your issue resolved the first time and disable auto updates to at least see if the issue returns or not with it off.
