confused RE: Android work on WCG

Couple things:

  • Sometimes when I open the BOINC client on my Samsung Android phone, I get a message saying another volunteer computing app has been detected, and you can only have one, therefore the BOINC manager will close. But it's evidently talking about itself! Does anybody else get this error and, if so, then is it a bug?
  • After my carrier pushed out the latest Samsung update I get a dialog that momentarily appears and says this version of BOINC is designed for an earlier version of Android; you may need to update the app for it to work correctly on the current Android version. But when I go to "My apps" in the Google Play store, BOINC doesn't appear in the list of apps waiting to be updated.

Anybody else see either of these 2 errors?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Re: RE: Android work on WCG

What version of BOINC are you using? Have you tried the BETA (Google Play store)?

I sometimes have the same error ("another volunteer computing app has been detected") with the BOINC beta. But I also run Dreamlab. Do you have it as well?

Re: RE: Android work on WCG

Yes, I often see that message but if I open Boinc again the message vanishes and Boinc opens O.K. However on the one android I use for making phone calls once I've made a call then the message just repeats itself and the phone has to be rebooted. As far as the other issue goes you can try the Beta Version. It's on Playstore but first you have to become a Beta Tester . Click on Boinc then scroll down until you see the join the Beta test button. Once you're joined (which can take a few minutes) you will see the update button.

If Dreamlab is BOINC based, that sounds like a correct response.

Re: RE: Android work on WCG

Actually it's not. At least I'm not aware of it. I just can they that I didn't have this message in the past. Just installed Dreamlab some weeks ago. And some time later I got this message first. For me there could be three reasons:
- there was an android update which lead to this problems with the Boinc app
- it's because of Dreamlab
- it's because of using the beta Boinc app (I switched to beta some weeks ago, before I had the stable version)

I was experiencing the same problem after the BOINC client was updated on my phone. After this update the app was also not computing in the background when my phone was charging and had more than 90% battery. Reinstalling the app fixed the problems for me.

Re: RE: Android work on WCG

As mentioned above my carrier pushed out an update to my Samsung, after which I (just once) got a dialog that momentarily appears and says this version of BOINC is designed for an earlier version of Android, and that I may need to update the app for it to work correctly on the current Android version. The new Android version, by the way, is version 10.

Since then I see that you've started pushing out MCM and SCC jobs for Android again. Unfortunately, I cannot run any work unit for longer than a few seconds. Android simply says "BOINC keeps stopping." If I go to the "Projects" tab then try to set "no new tasks," then the BOINC manager crashes. Should I reset the project? Or, how do I troubleshoot what's causing this? If BOINC is simply no longer compatible with Android, how do I manually cancel the jobs from the server so they can be re-assigned to somebody else?

Which Boinc version do you use?
The newest beta (7.16.5) seems to has a serious bug which crashs the client.
