Why do you need a badge...surely just helping with the research is enough? I couldn't give two hoots about a badge or how many results I have returned. I'm here to donate my computer resources to a worthy cause.

It's just in fun - it's not harmful. And even if it is - the end result is that resources are given to WCG. So yes, you can question the morals - but the end result is a benefit to the project, no?

Some people just enjoy tracking their results and being able to visualize their contribution to the project. While others have nothing better to do than complain. 
In 1969 I took an oath to defend and protect the U S Constitution against all enemies, both foreign and Domestic. There was no expiration date.

It's a way to game-ify something that takes very little effort from WCG staff. If badges aren't at the bottom of the techs list of things to ignore while people complain it surely is in the bottom 2.
