I agree. The knowledge that I am making a worthwhile contribution is reward itself. However we are competitive by nature not only with others but also with our very own selves. If I build a wall today, and my neighbours see it, I may well build a taller one tomorrow so that it can be seen by more people further afield. This has been a fundamental motivation since time immemorial.

The concept of badges incentivises my continuing donation of computer time and in the winter helps to heat my home. Austerity and the rising cost of energy made it necessary for me to shut down all the machines that I built and ran in memory of relatives who helped to formulate my desire to give and help.

This year, I ran the betas of the COVID-19 WUs and saw that they would be suited to rolling out a couple of the old faithfuls. I am close to the two-year mark so that is an obvious target The five-year badge is quite achievable and my total contribution to WCG is close to 400 years, so it looks as if those machines will be committed for the next few months.

Like you, I am here to donate resources to this worthy cause but I have to admit that the badges have helped me to gauge my level of commitment and keep me hooked.

Looking at machine stats have brought back memories like reading a diary. What happens next in the hopefully soon to come post-COVID-19 world will be a welcome next chapter and I hope we are all here to share it.
