Project popularity.

Is there, somewhere, a listing of the current projects ranked by popularity, in turns of active crunchers? If not, is there a way of finding that information out?

Re: Project popularity.

active crunchers, per WCG subproject, or WCG overall?

Because overall activity is here:
https://www.boincstats.com/stats/15/project/detail/user
https://boinc.netsoft-online.com/e107_plugins/boinc/bp.php?project=12

per subproject, not that I'm aware of.

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProject.do?projectShortName=opn1 might be a starting point to find what you need.

Re: Project popularity.

Someone from far down under now and then posts a stacked area chart which tracks years computed by day. Think that's the closest you'll get to 'most popular'.

The 'someone' is sheridon https://dc.sheridon.de/world-community-grid-statistics-q1-2020

Oops, he did a q2 too https://dc.sheridon.de/world-community-grid-statistics-q2-2020

Re: Project popularity.

In some projects, it probably wouldn't by so much be popularity rather it would be availability: APR & HST would fit this case. OPN1, MIP and MCM (and maybe the rest of the projects) would probably fall into the popularity group.

Re: Project popularity.

Hi cislman,
indeed, some projects cannot be "popular" because of the needed system requirements. For example, at the beginning of ARP1, not only the availability but the internet connexion bandwidth was an issue for me. Since beginning of June 2020, I have an FO connexion at home and I can download and upload several ARP1 WUs simultaneously on several machines without trouble and without locking the WCG infrastructure for too long (about 20 sec vs 20 minutes with my old ADSL).
Regarding HST, it is definitively a question of availability.
In the past, I experienced the 24 hours deadline for FAH2 as a constraint because of the performance of my machines (crunching several WCG projects simultaneously). Again with FO, it is less a problem since I reduced dramatically the buffer (from 4 days to 1.25 day).
Nevertheless, my feeling is that the most WCG projects are equally "popular" and well supported by the contributors.
My only concern remains MIP1 for performance reason. I initially supported strongly the project and after a couple of months (over 2 years contribution), noticing the remaining bad performances I stopped it. I restarted to compute some WUs (about 3 to 5 day daily contribution) only since two months using app_config.xml for managing/limiting better the project side effects. A significant performance improvement on MIP1 would definitively motivate me to crunch more for it.
Cheers,
Yves
