Re: OK! I've done it

That's a lot to digest in the reddit link.

The decision has already been made to go with a B550 using 32Gb memory and NO overclocking.

I can fit a second fan on the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO so we shall see about the heat.

My experience with moving the Ubuntu disk to different CPU and/or motherboard and from AMD to Intel was that I did nothing and it worked. The AMD to Intel really stunned me.

I would never try that with a Win disk...... but I did. Nothing!

[edit]
In that reddit list there is minor airflow and major airflow. I'm presuming he expects the machine to have it's covers on for that rating. I run all these machines with covers off so not sure it applies completely.

Just a suggestion, manually clock the CPU to around 4.0 Ghz and about 1.2 volts, it will run much cooler. The 4.6 Ghz boost clock on that chip sounds sexy but it uses over 1.4 volts to do that which generates a lot of extra heat and uses a lot more electricity. For 24/7 crunching, reliability, power consumption, and temps are key.

Also upgrade your motherboard to the latest bios to be able to run Ryzen 5000 series chips so it will be a drop in replacement. You may be able to get a 5900x or a 5950x in the future for a better price. Those do about 15-20% more work than Ryzen 3000.

Enjoy the build, Cheers.

Re: OK! I've done it

It is not fully correct: some projects are really demanding, e.g. MIP1, ARP1, ...

You use more resources because your operating system is MUCH bigger than Puppy64

Re: OK! I've done it

Hi gta198,
regarding Windows, I do agree with you.
Regarding Linux-based systems, all my systems (Ubuntu as well as Linux Mint) are below 700 MB without boinc running.
With 8 threads running simultaneously, 6 GB ("worst case") incl. those 700 GB are significantly more than 3.2 GB, even with Puppy64.
I was only making aware that some projects are demanding regarding RAM needs.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: OK! I've done it

About that reddit link: It does not have data on B550's unless X570 is B550. It goes from X570 to X470/B450.

Just checked. X570 isn't B550.

Seems a ASUS Prime X570-P would fit the bill and according to that reddit link it's good.

The B550 chipset was brought in specifically for Zen3 processors (but are backwards compatible with previous generations) and are therefore quite new.

Personally, I steer clear of the X570 boards. They are intended for serious overclockers and generally have fan cooled power stages etc. Expensive and noisy if you don’t intend to push the system to its limits.

I have 2 of the asus prime x570's, they are a good choice imo. Not that expensive around $150. They also have more options and connectivity than the B550 boards.

Over here the X570s are about 3 times the price of the B550s and I couldn’t justify that - I don’t use heavy GPUs so the pci4 channels would not be used, my board has 4 sata ports and 1 m.2 port which is more than enough for my single drive ...

Re: OK! I've done it

Thanks to all for the hints, tips, and insights.

It's a lot more complex putting together a "monster" than a general purpose desktop. Mary Shelley figured that out. smile

Luckily I did not rush the process.

Re: OK! I've done it

The system is now up: Ubuntu on Asus B550M-K, Ryzen 9 3900x, 2x16 GB memory and I kept my Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO but am monitoring the temperature. I gradually got it to 20 CPUs and it hovers at 76-80 Celsius.

On the link below the guy says: "84*C is perfectly fine, and to be expected, on the 3900X with the stock HSF. [with CPU at max] The thermal maximum is 95*C, so well within the safety limits".

I'm at 84% and it's not a stock HSF. So what would a 6 pipe HSF like a Noctua NH-D15s do for me.

https://community.amd.com/t5/processors/ryzen-9-3900x-temp/td-p/349357

There was a suggestion above from FlynRyan to "manually clock the CPU to around 4.0 Ghz and about 1.2 volts, it will run much cooler". Have not looked into that since I'm unsure where that is done.

So let's see what the numbers will say after a day or so of work.
