I played with the GPU processing on my machine, as was happy it could do some. I can see in this thread that some of you really prefer the GPU to CPU, so I'm back to just CPU, so you all can enjoy the extra 15-20 tasks. Though I'm sure it will be done so quickly that you won't notice.
I'm so close to my year badge and while the GPU gives high "points" they don't take much time, so I for me with only one GPU and 4 CPU, the CPU tasks make more sense so I can show off my badge. The what batch thread for CPU had guesses of this project being done in July. I have no idea how all this GPU processing will affect that, so I just want to make my year badge, before it is all done. Remember doing science is great, but projects like this offer PR opportunities to teach and involve a large group of people too. |

No worries Unixchick, just opt into both and if you get some GPU tasks, crunch them.
We're already doing a massive, massive cancer project that provides all the potential we need for PR that involves a large group of people. And nothing says PR like getting quick results. The overall average speedup by using a GPU is 334x. So, roughly, a GPU can do in a day what a CPU thread can do in a year. If all backlogged CPU work was pulled and reissued as GPU work, this project would go into 'intermittent' status within 24 hours. |

Interesting... What I'm asking myself then: If the OPN1 project would be finished in July by simply using CPUs, why bother to put extra work and money into developing a GPU version for the project for relatively low gain? Will there be a second phase for the project perhaps? ![]() |

What Unixchick likely read about July was an estimate of when we should have processed 50,000 batches of CPU work. When the project launched, it was said that each protein target (against which we are docking hundreds of millions of molecules to see which fit and disable viral processes, etc) would be about 50,000 batches long. However, there are many more targets and we were told by WCG that OPN was a "huge" project.

Not sure if I'm just lucky but overall I'm getting more tasks in the past 24 hours than usual. Maybe uplinger already cranked it up a little bit.

Not sure if I'm just lucky but overall I'm getting more tasks in the past 24 hours than usual. Maybe uplinger already cranked it up a little bit. I sure haven't seen it. Not a single OPNG unit since Sunday afternoon, and only a couple hours or so of total GPU crunching since the start. I don't want to join the script kiddie hordes just to get GPU units, so I'll just sit back. As long as the work gets crunched, I'm not going to worry about it. It's better for my electric bill if the GPU doesn't kick in. ![]() |
