Re: GPU Work Units - Post Your Tech Support Questions Here

recently, we all received a message from WCG, saying:

World Community Grid complete restart
World Community Grid finished the alpha testing, and is restarting on April 13.

it worked well for almost two weeks, but since yesterday, there is the well known "transient error" when trying to upload finished tasks. Why so?

and the bad thing is: as long as the upload queue in BOINC is stale, no new tasks can be downloaded sad

after the "transient HTTP error" happened when uploading finished tasks last week, now they occur when downloading tasks.

Unbelievable that after about 1 year, the team still was not able to solve all these problems :-(

Unbelievable that after about 1 year, the team still was not able to solve all these problems :-(

The new home of WCG is not as well-resourced as IBM was (and IBM wanted rid of WCG, which suggests they couldn't justify the expense any longer...) We might think of the new WCG as a patient that was initially on life-support; the alternative was probably a phased shut-down by IBM...

I suspect that until the magic money tree provides funding to double or triple the amount of processor threads to which they have access, and some way is found to increase the allowed number of simultaneous connections (possibly tied to the first point?), there will continue to be various resource contentions.

And as the magic money tree does not exist, they have to seek sponsorship and/or donations -- not easy in the current financial climate :-(

So I doubt it's going to get much better in the short term; longer term, who can tell?

Cheers - Al.

@alanb1951:
I am afraid you may be right in all what you were saying.

On the other hand, only recently they sent out a message to all of us stating how well everything is in place now.
Which very obviously is not the case :-(

So it would just be fair to let us know what is the truth, by telling us that this will not be the way they were before under IBM.

Anyway, the longer the situation continues the way it's been for almost a year now, the more volunteers they will loose (and I suspect they have lost many already).

Too bad to see WCG developping like that :-(

No new OPNG tasks for about 1 week :-(

Also, the "Results" page has been cut down to page 1 only, no further pages. Why so?

I can't see if this is a serious 'question' (without a question mark) or just a remark. biggrin Just to make sure, did you miss the May 2023 workunit update? That news update told us: "The OPN team is extremely grateful for all of the support and assistance our community has given to their project. They are preparing more OPNG work units and we will make them available as soon as uploaded to our servers."

Re: GPU Work Units - Post Your Tech Support Questions Here

After switching from a 980Ti to an AMD RX 6800 I get the message "No usable GPUs found" in my logs. I used to get GPU tasks for the Covid-19 project before and since the requirements are OpenCL this should work. I assume the reason is not that no tasks are available because I would expect a different error message in that case. I already reinstalled BOINC and reset the project itself. Any ideas what could cause this? I'm on Windows 11 using AMD Software: PRO Edition. Version 23.Q3
