Help- Had to recover my PC how to configure to keep processing if restarted

It has been over 2 years since someone passed on the steps to
set up the computer to continue to process work if the computer reset due to a Windows update during the middle of the night. I misplaced instructions. TIA

I think you need to install Boinc as a service for Windows to restart it automatically on a reboot.

The alternative is to add it to the startup applications but I think that this only runs with a user logged in.

You can also set Windows (& Linux) to log someone on at boot.
Be aware of security issue, need to ensure PC locks after inactivity.
Windows service install does not allow GPU work.

Many thanks, BRYN MAWR ---- I now remember I had to download and reinstall as a service.... Your answer will now be an electronic post it on at least two computers..

Re: Help- Had to recover my PC how to configure to keep processing if restarted

Hello everyone,

Congrats to you, BRYN MAWR, that you could help in this way.

I found out for my part how BOINC can be installed as a service here;

https://boinc.mundayweb.com/wiki/index.php?ti...7_series%29_on_Windows%3F

But what I do not know, is:
What are the benefits, if BOINC is installed as a service?

Will more CPU and/or GPU ressources be given / be available for the projects?

Here

https://www.overclock.net/forum/18056-boinc-g...windows-7-8-8-1-10-a.html

it is said that

"Use BOINC Screensaver – Checking this box will install the BOINC screensaver and configure Windows to use the BOINC Screensaver when the computer is idle; Service Install – Checking this box will install BOINC as a service. It is recommended to keep the box un-checked and not install BOINC as a service.

I would appreciate it, if the advanteges and disatvanteges of installing BOINC as a service could be explained. Thank you.
All the best

You know that it is still possible to update to 10 for free. I have a link. It is a genuine Microsoft site; not some hacked malware ridden version.

It worked less than 1 year ago.

Re: Help- Had to recover my PC how to configure to keep processing if restarted

Hello BobbyB,
Thank you for your kind offer.
But I think, that my old machine will simply not manage the update, and I want to keep this old computer as long as I can.

I feel that I am an environmentalist and I want to avoid electronic waste.

Sorry, but I have to say, that Microsoft with Windows contributed a lot to this horrible pile of electronic waste we have.

Each new version of Windows needed faster processors, more ram.

I whish for the sake of the evironment, that updating comes to an end.

All this waste....terrible already now.

All the best, good health, good mood and happiness all time whishes
Martin

Re: Help- Had to recover my PC how to configure to keep processing if restarted

Martin, I used to have three old Windows 7 laptops with dead or cracked screens. I still have one chugging away. Since it is just attached to the web to get work and return results not having updates is fairly safe.

Steady but slow (Open Pandemic work takes 10hrs!!!) combined they have contributed 42 CPU years. The one still in action is up to 17 Years.

Even if the screens were working I would only crunch on them. Periodically I hook up a monitor to see that they are still running and have work. Doing anything else is soooo slow.

So I don't consider it a sin to have faster processors and a more robust OS. Plus when I get new computers I buy used reconditioned corporate desktops. Extending their lives and getting a 3 year advance in processor performance usually for less than $400.

Re: Help- Had to recover my PC how to configure to keep processing if restarted

Hello dcs1955,
it ist not you, the user of Windows who, in my view causes the problem.

It is Microsoft making OS more and more demanding without necessity.

Do you agree, that Win 10 is not any better than Win 7?

Demanding more CPU power without reason and sense.....

Microsoft is a giant electronic waste producer....Microsoft....they force you to update.

It is not you who slows the old PC, it is the horrible Windows OS........

All the best
