Now I have another question that I haven't seen before. As I stated in my last thread I just built a Asus WRX80E with AMD 3995WX processor 128 gig proper ram according to ASUS CVL. win 10 at whatever the cd was I brought and updates run. I noticed when BOINC ran CPU bench marks it only saw 32 of 64 cores. Then while running it the last couple of weeks and trying to stress I succeeded to the point that windows task manager show 1% cpu load, boinc showed like it was still processing but nothing going thru. Other tasks seem to be able to close without issue. Boinc wouldn't and I ended up doing a front panel reset. That worked 2 of 3 times the other time I had to kill it by turning off the power to get it down. I watched my nice little code display while rebooting and it comes backup up fine. At one point I had 48 cp on for boinc and about a third were running the African Rain project and it pegged the processor 100% ran usages was about 40 gig or so. Limits are set higher.
----------------------------------------Have the developers yet to run across a threadripper yet? I got it just so I drive WCG and see how far I could push it. Yes it's power just like the said and heats my office just fine. Wont need to turn on the furnace this winter for it. Seems boine doesn't like it when i push it past 32 cores or even 32 cores. I've only had it safely run 16 without incident. Let me know any further details you like. Mike Parkhill ![]() |

Hi,
----------------------------------------Please post the event log from your BOINC client. Regarding the threads issue, I'm guessing BOINC is only seeing 64 threads. If so, you will need to edit a file called cc_config.xml that is usually at C:\ProgramData\BOINC. You can simply copy this, save the file and go to BOINC, Tools and "Read Configuration Files" <cc_config> <log_flags> </log_flags> <options> <ncpus>128</ncpus> </options> </cc_config> If the file doesn't exist, simply create one using notepad. Remember to save as .xml AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 1 times, last edit by Falconet at Nov 4, 2021 2:28:05 PM] |

Read config is under options but I knew what you talking about it. I've triggered it to read it. Now every time i open the log it looks like it's restarted from scratch to unless there is hidden one that is kept between ipls. the current one won't do you any good.
----------------------------------------Mike as normal i get this from boinc 11/4/2021 10:06:37 AM | World Community Grid | Project requested delay of 121 seconds 11/4/2021 10:06:57 AM | | Re-reading cc_config.xml 11/4/2021 10:06:57 AM | | cc_config.xml not found - using defaults 11/4/2021 10:06:57 AM | | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task screen print won't work so i can show the boinc directory or the contents of the file got to love pc's. not. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by mdparkhill at Nov 4, 2021 3:12:26 PM] |

BOINC isn't detecting the cc_config file.
----------------------------------------Did you save the file as xml? It also needs to be saved as file type "all files" on notepad. BOINC will detect and use 128 threads. I have no problem using BOINC on an EPYC server with 128 threads. If BOINC isn't seeing all the processors, I would suspect the problem might be Windows. IIRC, one would need a server version of Windows to utilize more than 32 cores (threads). I don't run Windows so this is a guess on my part

I running standard win10, not the server version so you may have hit the nail on the head. When first heard about the processor 3990 version to me it just sounded like souped vette. Once i was reading the users guide on my motherboard i then realized this is a true server not a mere pc. I'll keep it tuned down and watch what happens.

There have been some problems with more then 64 thread CPUs on Windows 10 home and Pro editions. Could switch to Linux if you want to. Can search the internet: 3995wx windows 10 core issue.
Computer hangs and requiring reset, possibly some computer hardware problem, or an antivirus software problem. RAM: Try memtest to check for errors. Using ECC RAM? CPU: make sure they are not overclocked. Could slow down clock if you want to. Storage: Fast SSD or slow HDD? HDD with hundreds of CPU tasks at 100% can make the whole system very slow to respond. About a year ago, I have had random hangs and invalids on 3 computers, all caused by failing non-ECC RAM. I have switched to using ECC UDIMM for computers that allows ECC memory. New RAM solved most of my problems. (AMD FX-4100, AMD Ryzen 2700x, Ryzen 3900x). |

----------------------------------------I was doing some research this morning and ya'll are right standard WIN 10 Pro can't handle it. I need to upgrade to Win 10 for Work stations for a few bucks more to handle the number of cores. Now it's time to do some more research on software compatibility issues with what I have installed and what I haven't gotten to yet. Thanks again Mike ![]() |

Boinc also has problems with so many cores (more than 64 Threads) on Windows:

Boinc also has problems with so many cores (more than 64 Threads) on Windows: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/WinMulticore https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/1357 Kinda sorta seems like a Windows manufactured problem. Why group processors into groups by default? What purpose does it serve especially in a single socket environment. Can understand in a multi-socket configuration to get processors closer to the memory assigned to it. Why not just present 128 single core processors by default but allow a group to be created using boot parameters if the user so desires. |
