OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

H guys,

I have 5950X + RTX2060 and a few questions:

1) Why there is always trouble to get GPU tasks? I have still situation like I get 10-20 gpu tasks downloaded and after it all processed 1 or 2 days I can't get another ones :/ My GPU stil have 12 to 24h waitstates.

2) Why I got so tiny points for GPU tasks? My 32-threads + 1 gpu gives me only 130k ppd. For example = in GPUGRID same GPU tasks gives me more per day from GPU only.

3) How to setup the BOINC to do 2 GPU tasks at once?

TFYH,
Miro

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

Why there is always trouble to get GPU tasks?

Because demand surpasses supply by far.

All data must be later processed and analyzed by the scientists. Supply is orientated towards the amount of work the scientists can handle.

Why I got so tiny points for GPU tasks? My 32-threads + 1 gpu gives me only 130k ppd. For example = in GPUGRID same GPU tasks gives me more per day from GPU only.

Points are a mere fantasy product in the Boinc world. There is a math project called Collatz Conjecture which will let you earn tens of millions of points each day. Each project decides the amount of points on its own, cross project comparisons are therefore useless.

You would need to use the app_config.xml file in the WCG project data folder.

Inside the file would be this text:

<app_config>
<app>
<name>opng</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

is there a good reason to run 2 GPU tasks at once instead of one if you have a single video card?

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

The reason is to fully utilise powerful cards.
Single OPNG tasks do not manage to do so.

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

Good day forum,

I am an old time WCGer but this is my first post.

I resurrected an old PC (playing around with overclocking and reinstalled WCG). (By the way I am very pleased with the OC result on my Q9450 on P5Q SE Plus - 463MHz FSB).

Back to my main question: I only just turned on GPU computing for the first time ever but I see my ATI GPU (Radeon HD5770) pretty much sits at idle (0-1% activity) while there are GPU tasks running. I observed the progress for the first 5 minutes and it is on track to complete OPNG twice as fast as CPU. But this morning when I woke up, the same task is at 99.8xx% complete, ~48seconds remain. And the progress only goes only about 0.001% every 30-35s or so.

I knew something is wrong but I just don't know what it is.

I want to utilize my GPU more and turn results in quicker.... what am I doing wrong?
(I have tried to run the whole rig in default (i.e. no overclocking but same behaviour)

Here are the startup stats:

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

Are you running this in a VM with Windows as the guest operating system?

Running Windows 10 natively with an Radeon HD 6770, I could not get it to work earlier last year.

You could also look through the GPU Support Forum and see if there are similar problems with that generation of Radeon cards in some of the threads there.

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

I also have the ATI Radeon HD5770, it will run GPU WUs but they never complete without error.

shock Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

It is a native Win10 install (i.e. not on VM).

I managed to get BOINC to successfully run a few GPU tasks and for a OPNG, it takes about 15 minutes *WOAH*

However, I am now sitting on two frozen tasks, one at 90.000% and another 33.333% (for about an hour already).

I have removed Windows 10 suggested video driver and downloaded the latest directly from AMD (which itself is still old - was from 2015).

When the GPU was running, it also caused a few system freezes likely due to my overclocking (that I otherwise thought was stable).

For your 6770, is it consistently working on tasks without issues? I feel my system is a hit and miss. It will be a bummer for me to abort the two tasks when, if successful, should have taken only ~15 minutes....

Currently (and thanks to bluestang's tip), my app_config.xml is instructing the app to perform OPNG tasks with 0.1 CPU and 0.5 GPU. Without this, my system can't do anything on GPU even though it grabbed a few GPU tasks.

Any other suggestions?

BTW, thanks for the quick reply. it has been a while since I have been active on ANY forum!

Re: OpenPandemics - COVID19 GPU tasks

I tried it back last spring when beta and a flood of normal GPU tasks came out. It finished a few okay, but I got a lot of unable to finish tasks. When I would exit boinc to try to get it going again, the task would error out.
