Re: Hardware Recovery Update

@Tomahawk4196
My posts are not related to missing trust in Krembil and its team. They are only related to "reason".
If we do not know where we come from and where we should go to, we cannot start.
Starting donation (with good will) without a clear view of the current situation, the objectives, and of the way to reach those, will be simply useless and wasting resources.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Dr. Jurisica,

Thank you so much for all your effort, hard work, patience, and perseverance.

As others have said, a percentage bar stating how much money WCG needs and how much it has received so far would be extremely persuasive and motivating.

I would be so glad to support WCG, but unfortunately, I cannot. I tried donating through the UHN donations website, but I could not get through the form since only US and Canadian provinces can be selected (even after choosing Spain as my country), and my Spanish bank declined the donation since the address was not correct.

Furthermore, I reported the bug to UHN, and I got a reply from Sheryl confirming that she would look into the problem. I do not know if the bug is going to be solved, but I cannot donate until then.

Best wishes and regards.

José Ángel

Hi Jose!

If You scroll to the last of the Province/ State, select None and then You can complete the donation like I did a day ago! 😉

Greetings from
Oslo

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Hi, Hans!

Thank you for your help. 😀 I truly value it.

Unfortunately, I cannot do it. I tried four times yesterday and I just tried again. No luck. My bank (BBVA) forces me to select Madrid as my province. Otherwise, the bank will decline the donation/purchase as the address is not accurate.

Thank you, Hans.

Greetings from Madrid.

Sir: I submit to you that without a detailed business plan, trust is the ONLY 'reason' anyone would provide any type of donation (cash or computer time) to any cause. Donors of either must trust that their donation is being used wisely.

I was convinced that Dr. J. can be trusted after reviewing some of his publications: https://www.cs.toronto.edu/~juris/jlab/publications.html

He definitely knows where he is coming from, and where he and his team are going, from a scientific perspective.

The fact that they now need a slightly different form of donation does not alter their scientific goals, or my trust in their dedication to pursuing those goals.

Again I ask: Please let all your teammates know that WCG needs small monthly donations from many crunchers, in order to continue allowing us to volunteer.

Once your teammates know, they can decide for themselves if they trust that their $5 or $10 will be spent wisely.

Your desire for a detailed business plan is NOT unreasonable, and it may be forthcoming from WCG at some point, but right now, they desperately need an infusion of cash - along with our trust that they will use it well.

If 1,000 of us pool our small resources, we can help them solve some nagging problems permanently ... which will then give them time to document their next steps.

Thank you again for any donations you can make.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

All, As an experienced WCG cruncher (#61 in the world, 458,140,866 points.) I am really upset by the continued downtime. I have turned off more than 1000 cores, since they have no work. I also have NO ETA that I can find from Krembil.

On a personal note: I crunch this much, as I lost my hearing, balance, bladder and prostate to cancer 4 years ago.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

markfw,
Sorry to hear about your personal note.
I was diagnosed 7 years ago with leiomyosarcoma, so have been trying to focus on crunching for the sarcoma project.
I'm sad that IBM is no longer providing resource or funding for WCG. :-(
The current state of affairs is quite depressing - we have so many folks willing to donate computer time, and I've encouraged others in the "cancer world" to donate their cycles, and unfortunately no central funding for the infrastructure to pull it all together.
:-( Now I'm putting my 3 measly systems to sleep instead of letting them run 24x7 for research.
:-(

markfw:

You are right to be upset and frustrated - WCG should work as it did previously, under IBM. Clearly you have spent a lot of money on computer hardware .... can you consider sending $5 or $10 per month to WCG, to help them with their hardware problems?

Cancer shaped much of my early life, too, which has always been a strong motivator for me to continue crunching. Without WCG, I would not be able to participate so directly in the fight against cancer, so I feel like I need WCG as much as they need me.

Right now WCG is 'sick', and the cure is simply cash, so please help by donating whatever you can.

Thank you for your long-term support - let's keep it going!
