Re: Hardware Recovery Update

If anybody thinks its easy to get funding, I invite them to go read through the SETI forums. A good chunk of their funding came from individuals. Corporations are stingy. IBM was only providing minimal support for a t least a few years before the announcement to the passover to Krembil. You can read that here on the forums.

The best way to get money is if their name gets some broad good-will, such as in the news. What needs to be done is try to get some news coverage associated with organizations or folks running for a devoted cause. I want to say Sawyer's Cancer Fighting Network had some news coverage when it started, but I'm not sure if that was them or another cause that I saw.

Another alternative is getting some companies to match employee donations, although typically the non-profit has to get registered with the company (either individually or part of a master list).

I would suggest to you Dr Jurasica reach out to the other established BOINC project admins for fundraising ideas and tips. They should be able to point you in the right direction especially with good ways to handle user donations.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

I did ask the question about lesser donations than the ones offered, recurring donations, and donations by cheque. I received the following reply:

"Regarding recurring donations, I will bring that forward to the appropriate person responsible for the form.
In order to make a smaller donation, simply enter the amount in the blue box as shown below. (The blue box on the donation page)
If you would like to make a donation by cheque or money order, please make payable to: UHN Foundation, in the memo line, indicate to the World Community Grid. Mail to:

UHN Foundation
R. Fraser Elliott Building
5th Floor, 5S-801

If you have any further questions, please let me know or feel free to call the Foundation at 416-603-5300 or toll-free: 1-866-846-4483.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

well - there is optics and politics and there is reality.

I try to minimize it - but I get "reminded" that UHN needs to be mentioned.

There's a very good response for that: Show me the money. ;)

(I realize it's not that easy to do that in a big corporate like organization, but the sentiment is there nonetheless. They want the glory, okay, let's have a little loving here for Jurasica Labs then. Anytime there's an achievement, we'll plaster UNH and Krembil names and glorify them all over the press releases, but need a little loving in return.)

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

UHN can be mentioned by indicating how much money it has put into WCG! :D

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

I donated my 2 bits.

Dr. J. Maybe posting the number of contributors (not $) will help inspire others to donate.. Nothing spurs participation like knowing that others are participating..

Agreed, but I say give them a couple of weeks to make sure everything is in order first.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Short-answer: You can't get a tax deduction to a foreign organization no matter how wonderful they are.

Sometimes we donate for reasons other than getting a tax deduction. Just because we think it fosters a necessary good.

Cheers

Ooops, I meant to write:

You can't JUST get a tax deduction to a foreign organization no matter how wonderful they are.

Damn keyboards out to get us... I'd show mine whose boss but I use a laptop so a new keyboard is a pricey option...

Yes, good idea - some form of that can only help

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

IBM was only providing minimal support for a t least a few years before the announcement to the passover to Krembil.

IBM supported WCG operation over 15 years long with infrastructure and people (around 5 persons, if I remember correctly).
You can call it "minimal support" nevertheless WCG was highly reliable; even when problems occurred during the night or a week-end the WCG tech staff was able to react.
During all those years, the only break was 2 days long because of the move of the data centre (about 10 years ago). It was planned, announced, and well-managed.

Even if IBM made a very good job during 15+ years, I am very frustrated that IBM did not do a particularly good job for selecting a new operating organisation.
The first deception was that IBM decided to resign.
The second deception is to see that IBM did not selected a robust successor.

I can understand that Krembil/Jurissica are frustrated to have such a hard time.
At the other side, many contributors are highly disappointed to spend electricity power for "nothing", in particular because of the current kW price.
Definitively WCG is a number too big for Krembil and the situation is disappointing for everybody: contributors because they know that it was possible in the past to provide smooth support and reliable operation; for Krembil because WCG sucks too much resources without a reasonable chance to succeed.

The main question #1 is: why did IBM management decide to stop supporting WCG?
The main question #2 is: could donation help Krembil to provide a reliable support with sufficient performance for the future? Honestly, I don't believe it will.

I may (hopefully) fail regarding question #2, however the last 12 months are definitively not comforting.
Cheers,
Yves
