Re: Hardware Recovery Update

My assumption has been that WCG just needs to be at the same level of technology and expertise that it was when IBM ran the show, so that would be the plan, the 'business vision' you rightly expect.

I'm sorry to have to disagree, since the provided statement is not a business plan.
I would never start an investment project with such a limited statement. When I ask for a quantified business plan, I mean at least:
  • Overall objectives
  • Quantified current situation and configuration
  • Target configuration: incl. hardware, software, personnel, energy, support, repair and maintenance
  • Gap analysis
  • Remediation respectively improvement measures
  • Steering committee
  • Governance rules
  • Incomes and sponsoring
  • Monitoring, controls, and reporting

Based on the 2022 communication, I guessed that Krembil inherited the WCG hardware and software platform from IBM. The messages of the last days show finally a totally different reality.
Without knowing the exact reality, without knowing what is effectively needed, without being able to calculate how much human, financial, technical (i.e. expertise and knowledge) resources are required, it is not reasonable to go ahead since the troubles will recurrently occur and the contributors will become tired by the troubles.

I would prefer to experience a stop now and that Krembil takes time to honestly assess if a reliable solution is reachable.
  • Maybe yes: I will be happy to further support WCG
  • Maybe no: in this case an alternate reliable solution must be found or, otherwise, a controlled shutdown must be considered. I will be very sad, but with a lot of good memories and the feeling to have probably contributed to some sciences during the last 15 years.

In all cases, the current situation is highly disappointing and disturbing.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

I made the "blue box" donation mentioned several posts ago. We'll see what happens.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Maybe Scripps Research Institute in San Diego has the funding necessary to host WCG. They've worked with WCG in the past on FightAIDS@Home and Ebola (?) I believe.

On another note, with UHN/Krembil/Jurisica Lab: For individual donations, I'd love to see full transparency on WCG's hardware and hosting needs. For example:

$10,000 CAD needed for ABC Flash Storage server
$4,000 CAD needed to purchase XYZ BOINC Database server
$3000 CAD for new web server cluster
$1000 CAD to purchase new website and forums software and overhaul
$6000 CAD for annual domain registration, DNS, datacenter hosting
$40,000 CAD for a part-time WCG system administrator per year

I'm just making up numbers. It'd be nice to have exact numbers and details and maybe a colorful progress bar to show how much of each goal is funded. That way those of us who are thinking of donating money will at least have an idea where the money is going to.

For folks that tried to use the original link and had issues -- the below is the shortened version via TinyURL if you don't want to go to WCG's donation page to hunt for the Link...

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

PS -- There needs to be a "Buy them a Beer" link-button too.

The guys in the Lab are feeling tremendous pressure -- this is something just as near / dear to them as it is for us. I appreciate Cyclops, Dr J, and the others for the recent posts.

VERY True - it helps A LOT when we have specific goals - tho I am not inclined to ask more of the team, it would be great to see such info, for sure.

You are correct. and i agree.

It is not 'reasonable' to go ahead - it would be an act of faith and trust to support Dr. J and his team, at $5 per month.

I must say though: Having looked at his research, having reviewed Dr. Jurisica's body of work, and the number of scientific publications to which his name is attached, i can confidently state that I trust that he and his team will spend my $5 per month wisely. Their goal is my goal: To do the research necessary to end cancer, and COVID, and Zika, etc.

THEY are doing the heavy lifting - WE are only helping in whatever ways we can. Five dollars a month is not much, so we need MANY people to make such contributions. PLEASE ask your team members to consider contributing, even if you yourself have doubts - some of them will be willing to help, and WCG needs as many donors as possible.

Thank you for anything you can give.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Dr J,

You might talk with the ol'SETI project folks about how they handled getting their hardware. They got a couple of decades plus of experience, although in the beginning they had a lot of partners that wanted to build that train. But interest waned over time and they had to start being more self-sufficient. Professor Anderson might be a good start and you can grab some names from the SETI@home forum..My interests shifted away from SETI to other projects over time so I can't supply more specifics off-hand and don't want to send you chasing after the wrong folk.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Well, it appears WCG was in attendance at the last BOINC Projects Call even if Dr. J wasn't able to make it himself:

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/BoincProjectsCall

I was looking up the resource but it appears WCG is aware of it already and should take further advantage of it. ;)
