Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

I think that when we hit 1.4 million in the returns, that everyone is crunching happily. That is also if no other projects are sending out WUs and it is just MCM.

the 800k being returned now is still not enough, but I'm hopeful that it is more than we had yesterday, and I'm getting a steady supply right now.

As per the last few days, Windows has almost a full queue and Linux has nothing.

Cheers
Have only one Linux host running, which I also haven't touched in terms of backup project or such, a Linux Mint 20.3 machine, running on an i5 with 8GB of RAM and that has constantly a queue of about 20 WUs...

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Wohoo ! One Linux host is up to 1/2 queue.

Edit: The website is flaky this morning. It took me 5 tries to log in. Sometimes the login page just returns to itself and asks me to login again and sometimes I get the "503" error.
My Linux systems are getting a few work units, but they periodically run out and then when they do get a few units again, of course, the large MCM file has to be downloaded again. The Windows system stays fully loaded, but the Linux systems are in and out, not getting a full queue and then running out. Rinse and repeat.

Edit#2: Just got the "503" error trying to post this. OK, lets try again. And again.
Cheers

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

No new OPNG tasks for over 12 hours. Periodical "503" errors, at times followed by the login page. sad
I'm going to shut down my GPU cruncher, and perhaps instead start a slower Laptop a few hours/day, for CPU tasks only. I do not have, or want, any backup project, so it is WCG or nothing. If WCG doesn't deliver work, then I will save money on my electricity bill. smile

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Definitely still having issues filling up with work and things do not seem to be improving with time. If anything, we are processing fewer work units than a week ago. Has anyone seen improvements with work flow?

Yes, from a minimum of 75 on the 31st March and a subsidiary minimum of 269 on the 3rd of April then a steady climb to 411 yesterday.

That’s on 2 Linux systems, cannot comment on Windows.

My Windows system has a full queue and the Linux systems have about 75% queue. Better, but still not full processing.

Edit: On April 7, 2023 WCg processed a little over 2.6 million work units. If we use that figure as the full working capacity of the system then WCg is currently operating at about 38% of capacity.

That number makes sense- we are running at about 30-40% maximum capacity.

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

Regarding the 2.6 million WUs on that date -- when I spotted that I had a look, and there's a caveat to that in that 1.9 million of them appeared to have been OPN1/OPNG :-)

Most other days around then seem to be in the 1.0 to 1.4 million range, and when OPN1 went away 1 million seemed to become the maximum rather than the minimum. It went back up again when the next batch of OPNG came around, as one might expect, but it has not seemed to reach such a high level again (and certainly not consistently!)...

Also, when SCC1 is running we typically see another 100,000 or so results per day. However, OPNG and SCC1 work is beyond WCG control (and I do wonder it we will ever see HST1 again...) [And let's not mention ARP1, at 10.5 months and counting...]

It's unfortunate that at present MCM1 is trying to substitute for all that other missing work, as I rather doubt they can just double [or triple!] the amount of work generated per day so if they were to feed more of it out at once there would probably be quite a lot of drought days. They are probably as keen to see ARP1 back again as some of us are! :-)

It is [very] frustrating, but if some sort of steady flow is happening and any system issues seem to relate to the Web site rather than to the BOINC servers I guess that's all we can hope for at present :-)

Cheers - Al.

Al,
You are correct and I should have put that caveat in the post. Nevertheless, I think of the overall system capacity versus each individual project capacity. Not having a full understanding of how the backroom operations work I do speculate quite a bit. I don't know if there is a per project ceiling on returned results or if the system is flexible enough to accommodate differing project results. I am thinking of the ability to apportion resources based on demand or if the configuration of processing is "hard coded" so to speak. If one server becomes overloaded can they fire up another server(s) to handle the overload. In other words, do they have system wide load balancing in effect, if needed.
It would interesting to know.

Cheers

Re: Project Status (First Post Updated)

The fact that there is no communication makes it hard to determine what they can or can't do, let alone any indication on what they´re keen to do.

The absent communication does not seem to indicate any keenness to me. There are quite a few things that would be solved 'soon' or things that the team would look at (MCM 500 year badges anyone?) that just don't seem to materialize.
