I think we should be actively recruiting for additional projects!

Everyone here seems to be talking about Teraflops lately. What exactly is a (Tera)flop?

1 TeraFlop = 1000 GigaFlops!
![]() A measure of a computers computational power. Flops = Floating Point Operation per Second. Floating-point is, according to IBM, "a method of encoding real numbers within the limits of finite precision available on computers." Using floating-point encoding, extremely long numbers can be handled relatively easily. A floating-point number is expressed as a basic number or mantissa, an exponent, and a number base or radix (which is often assumed). The number base is usually ten but may also be 2 http://search390.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid10_gci213966,00.html FLOPS is a common measure for any computer that runs these applications. |

Yeah. It's nice to be on the upswing.

Thanks, but how do you determine how many flops a computer "produces"? (Sorry I think I'm hijacking this topic, so I'll keep my mouth shut regarding the flops and everything ![]() ![]() ![]() |

depriens,
mycrofth gave a link earlier in another forum that allows you to calculate stuff. This might give you an idea. I found it pretty helpful. http://www.ud.com/rescenter/ dreplogle |

----------------------------------------If you want to know how many floating point operations you PC can do download SiSoftSandra from http://www.sisoftware.net/ It includes many useful applications in addition to a number of benchmarks that will let you know how your PC is running (or not) Just remember while ever you are running for instance the "Burn In" wizard that all that number crunching power could be used on the Grid. Take care, have fun, but if your PC starts smoking it wasn't me that gave you this advice ![]() Dave ![]() |
