I am not sure if the scientists or IBM have invited Bill Gates and Microsoft to participate in it. As an ordinary member, I have written to Bill Gates with a request to participate. If it happens, imagine what difference it can make!!!

Hi Mycrofth
----------------------------------------So good is that AMD XP architecture it's been carried forward into the Athlon64 now with SSE2 and 3 on the latest San Diego core. Still saving my pocket money Do you know if BOINC can take advantage of the Floating Point Extensions of the new CPU's? I understand that this is not currently happening with the UD agent. V.S.S.SARMA I hope Uncle Bill brings MS on board that would be just great. One day maybe even the XBOX360 could be used to crunch on the WCG On the outside of the box it claims 1 TFlop of number crunching power ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Anyway which ever way you choose to measure a Floating Point Operation yesterday we were together posting 1,205,374 points per hour
----------------------------------------Which would take 41,000 PC's like mine (a 3200+ XP Athlon powered cruncher with 512Mb Ram and the full 10Gb allowance for disk space) which ever way you look at it that's a lot of number crunching going on The equivalent of a 131200Ghz P4 ![]() ![]() |

So... given a ballpark figure... what would the measurement be of the WCG?
----------------------------------------I see the stats - amazing number of points, cpu time, and users... but what does that translate into? I'm writing a paper on distributed and grid computing - I'd like to include a guestimated TFlop calculation to compare the grid to the best and most expensive supercomputer constellations on the planet. Using a rough calculation based on the rosetta reference, and the current number of nodes WCG has we're pushing 70teraflops. Again, this is so rough you'd cut yourself if you handled it with bare hands. If anyone has some harder numbers - I'm all for it. Eitherway, this project blows my mind with how much power we're willing to donate to make life better for people we'll probably never meet or know. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 17, 2005 9:52:31 PM] |
