New cases of HIV drug resistance dramatically decreasing in British Columbia
Fewer and fewer British Columbians are developing resistance to antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV infection, according to a new study published this week in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. The study, conducted by researchers at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE), found a significant decrease in the number of new cases of drug resistance over the past decade, alongside an increase in the number of patients successfully suppressing HIV to undetectable levels. Together, these findings show that HIV treatment is becoming more effective and more robust, with a corresponding improvement in clinical outcomes for patients. “These study results are good news for all HIV-positive British Columbians receiving therapy,” said Richard Harrigan, Ph.D., lead investigator and Director of Research Laboratories at the BC-CfE..... |

"Scientists at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology (GIVI) have discovered a new agent that might inhibit the infectivity of HIV. The agent, surfen, impairs the action of a factor in semen that greatly enhances the viral infection. Surfen might be used to supplement current HIV microbicides to greatly reduce HIV transmission during sexual contact."

Uganda to host major HIV centre
EACCR will bring together 10 countries of Ethiopia, Germany, Kenya, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Sudan, Tanzania, United Kingdom and Uganda-with an initial funding of 3.5 million pounds. “Through this network, we hope to conduct clinical trials for better vaccines and drugs. We want newer drugs because some of these drugs like the one for malaria have become resistant to current drugs,” Dr Kaleebu explained http://www.monitor.co.ug/News/National/-/688334/848264/-/wheup6/-/ |

Snake venom turns elixir of life for HIV patients
http://www.deccanchronicle.com/hyderabad/snak...xir-life-hiv-patients-871 Snake venom preparation for drug-resistant human immunodeficiency virus http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18545005 'Resistance of human immunodeficiency virus to antiretroviral therapy is a major concern. As new therapies are few, progress to acquired immune deficiency syndrome will ensue. We report a patient with multidrug-resistant HIV, high viral load, and low CD4 count who took a snake venom preparation while maintained on antiretroviral therapy. The response was impressive with a decreased viral load and increased CD4 count that was maintained for one year.' |

The Invisible AIDS Victims: How Women Cope
Northwestern University associate professor Celeste Watkins-Hayes studies women with HIV/AIDS and the economic resources that help them effectively manage their health An image of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), taken with a scanning electron microscope. Credit and Larger Version When people picture the faces of famous Americans who are personally affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, they tend to see Magic Johnson, Ryan White, Rock Hudson or Greg Louganis, to name a few. Seldom, if ever, is the deadly virus associated with the face of a woman. |
