An interesting research abstract on HIV Integrase inhibitors http://jac.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/65/2/320

This seems to highlight the great importance and value of the WCG FAAH recent computer modeling experiments in coming up with approaches to block HIV's ability to evolve Integrase resistance, not only to those with HIV subtype B but to those around the world with other subtypes.

We at the WCG really are, collectively making, a difference !

Re: Interesting news articles about AIDS

This research paper discusses in some depth HIV's use of VPr to manipulate the cell to maximize its replication, but it also intriguingly mentions that caffeine seems to block some of its effects. It would appear that a cup of Green Tea, Regular Tea, or even normal Coffee might not might not do this particular HIV protein much good http://www.bentham.org/chivr/sample/chivr3-1/005AB.pdf

Road-map agreed for confirmatory trials of promising microbicide

Call for further trials needed to make promising antiretroviral gel available to women at risk of HIV as quickly as possible
Two further clinical trials are planned to confirm a vaginal gel which has shown potential in reducing the risk of HIV. The results of the first trial of the gel, which were announced in July at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, must be confirmed before the product can be made available for general use.
The tenofovir-based gel was found to be 39% effective to reduce a woman's risk of becoming infected with HIV during sex in a study completed by the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), a UNAIDS Collaborating Centre on HIV prevention research.....

Understanding HIV And AIDS

Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Scientists in Montreal say they've discovered that a specific protein -- called the viral protein R (Vpr) -- may help them better understand HIV and AIDS.
"We previously identified that HIV, when infecting target cells, blocks cell division and induces cell death," Dr. Eric A. Cohen, was quoted as saying. "We then discovered that the Vpr protein was involved in this process."
The scientists say HIV-1 encodes Vpr, which plays an important role in the development of AIDS. Vpr blocks normal cell division. This process is believed to increase viral replication and trigger immune cell death......

A number of studies from across the globe suggest that mental health issues are on the rise in people who have HIV and AIDS. In fact, an analysis of these findings suggests that twice as many people with HIV have mental health issues than that of people without the disease....

Novel Sensing Mechanism Discovered in Dendritic Cells to Increase Immune Response to HIV http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/09/100908132210.htm

"Dendritic cells are the grand sentinels of the immune system, standing guard 24/7 to detect foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, and bring news of the invasion to other immune cells to marshal an attack. These sentinels, however, nearly always fail to respond adequately to HIV, the virus causing AIDS. Now a team of scientists at NYU Langone Medical Center has discovered a sensor in dendritic cells that recognizes HIV, spurring a more potent immune response by the sentinels to the virus. They report their findings in the September 9, 2010, issue of Nature......."

HIV's Sugar Coating Offers New Vaccine Approach http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/07/100723130141.htm

"The chains of sugar molecules, or carbohydrates, that cover the outside of the highly variable HIV virus remain constant, are different from those found on human cells, and could form the basis of a promising new approach to an AIDS vaccine, according to research led by the University of Oxford..."
