Problem PC.

I was looking through my list of devices and noticed that one of my pc's is getting quite a few errors on it since I loaded boinc and started crunching. The device name is xw6000. I was wondering if one of the techs could look at some of the returned errors and maybe decipher what could be causing the problem.

Thanks
Brink

Re: Problem PC.

Hello brinktastee,
It is likely that the error code returned to the WCG is very uninformative. I would suggest that you look at the Useful Utilities thread at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2490 and consider downloading:

1) Belarc Advisor at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
This is a small download that creates a web page listing basic information about your system. You can use cut-and-paste into Wordpad to create a brief report on your system.

2) SiSoft Sandra at http://www.sisoftware.net/?location=update
This download contains a number of free system diagnostic modules, including several standard benchmark routines.

3) Everest at http://www.lavalys.hu/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en
This download is a freeware hardware diagnostics and memory benchmarking program that marysduby posted about.

2) CPU Tester: http://7byte.com/index.php?page=download
General diagnostic program

3) Memory Tester: http://www.memtest86.com/
Memory diagnostic program

Added: Hahh!!! I was wrong! But I have something to add to knreed's post. Make sure that you are running the BOINC 5.4.9 version recommended at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php Rosetta@home found and fixed a bug in the old 5.2.?? version which often caused this problem.

Re: Problem PC.

brinktastee,

First of all - nice collection of computers - we appreciate the crunching.

The error you are experiencing is the 'rosetta' error. This error is triggered when the application is removed from memory by BOINC. The most common cause for the application being removed from memory is is when a user participates in multiple BOINC project and the application is removed from memory after running for an hour to switch to another project.

The recommended workaround for this problem is to set you 'Switch between applications every:' on your BOINC profiles (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do) to something over 4-6 hours.

Also - please note that Human Proteome Folding (hpf1) project is largely complete. However, the Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 project is about to begin. Read more at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7613

thanks,
Kevin

Re: Problem PC.

Stumbled on this newsbit at BOINC, which infers the answer to the memory unload problem is underway confused

June 16, 2006
BOINC's CPU scheduler has become smarter: it now waits until an application has checkpointed to preempt it and remove it from memory. This can save significant CPU time, especially on multiprocessors. Technical details are here. The new scheduler is in the development version of BOINC, and will appear in the 5.6 release. Volunteer developer John McLeod VII was the driving force behind the new scheduler.
