As Didactylos and I both learned quite recently, the next project is not likely to have smaller initial system requirements. Rather larger.
----------------------------------------![]() Of course, we will not know for certain till it actually is launched. |

My slowest computer was not qualified for anything at the moment using the UD interface. It was running HPF1, but that one is done. I changed it to the BOINC interface and it's crunching FAAH. It didn't have enough memory for HDC or HPF2. BOINC has lower requirements. At least it's something. This Pentium III/500MHz can turn in a workunit every 35 hours. You must finish a workunit in 7 days.
----------------------------------------With a slow computer susceptible to memory leaks, I recommend rebooting it just after starting each new workunit. That keeps things fresh, and minimizes problems due to wasted checkpoints. I'm assuming that it needs to run 24/7 to finish it on time.

I think there is a universal regret when machines are disqualified for any reason. I have lost some work for this same reason and it is truly regrettable.
----------------------------------------![]() On the other hand, the problems that we are trying to solve are anything but simple and it is apparently quite difficult to get the programming to work correctly let alone get it to work correctly and do so while being frugal relative to resource requirements. It is one of those things that bother us all. Hopefully as time goes by, there will be those eureka moments when a programmer discovers a way to reduce the requirements in each of the projects. The only thing I can do personally is enable all projects and hope that the smaller machines can find scraps of work here and there. Kind Regards to all and Thank You for your continuing contribution. ![]() |

Rutgers University and Rick Alther managed to reduce the working set of pages for Help Defeat Cancer from 1.2+ GB to only 500+ MB. This was a major shrink, and tells us all just how large the programs can be that they are producing in labs today.
