Throttling Linux Client back?

HOW DO I DO IT...

cos unless I can throttle it back from 100% to something like 50% so that my CPU and PSU fans aren't running maxed out, I won't be running it... I've had a PSU fan failure before and it wan't funny...

and it'll be sayonara BOINC...

Re: Throttling Linux Client back?

You will have to find a third party utility.

However, normal maxed out CPU usage shouldn't put undue strain on your fans. My computers are spinning along and chilling. The additional strain on your PSU will be negligible. If you're concerned about overheating, far better to invest in better fans, passive cooling or canned air.

A clean computer is a happy computer.

Re: Throttling Linux Client back?

I found this script:

throttle.sh

#!/bin/sh

while true; do
kill -STOP $1
sleep 300
kill -CONT $1
sleep 90
done

usage:
./throttle.sh PID

where PID is the process ID of the process you want to control
(get process ID using top)

It sleeps the process for 5 minutes and then allows it to run for 1.5 minutes

the times are easily tailored by editing the sleeps in the script.

Where I found it is here:

Re: Throttling Linux Client back?

Manic,

A simple but effective alternative to throttling is to remove the side cover from your computer. It works if you don't have curious cats and kids who might poke fingers and noses inside. You also want to be careful about metallic objects dropping on your desktop, for example, then bouncing into the computer.

I've removed the cover from one of my older machines that I don't want to spend time and money upgrading. I faced the open side to a wall to keep cats, kids and bouncing objects out, left a 3" gap between the wall and the computer. A buddy removed the cover on his and then built a screen out of a few sticks of wood and spare window screen to cover the open side. Cheap yet very effective.

Cleaning the fan blades and cooling fins is the first priority though.

Re: Throttling Linux Client back?

I've cleaned my system fans after almost 4 years non-stop running. According Speedfan, the main cooler went from 3500 to 3950 rev max (with substantial noise reduction when it's pacing at 2250), but never opened the PSU....after 4.5+ years it might be time to get the gloth out from there too.

This freeware util is a gem as it simply revs up any controllable fan to keep system temp at a desired constant. Version 4.28 is available from here: Speedfan for Linux (made in italy smile )

Interesting is a development in the SFF computer realm, where PSU's have been moved outside of the PC box, same as laptops....great and you never have to pack them biggrin

Re: Throttling Linux Client back?

This won't help you now, but the next version of the BOINC Client (5.6) will include throttling. You will be able to configure this in your device preferences on the website. We will announce the availability of this feature in the member news (once it is available).

However, it is likely to be another 4-6 weeks before it is available.

This is implemented and being tested in 5.5.
