Re: force a checkpoint

the AIDS one....

anyways why does one loose 10-15% ?

previously it wasn't this way crying

If you are using the UD interface, it is possible to watch the graphics and notice EXACTLY when a checkpoint has passed. Waiting until then means that 0% is lost. Yes, unfortunately there is a very long time between checkpoints for the current projects. Perhaps HDC will be different as we get more experience watching that one.

The BOINC interface unfortunately does not display any indication of checkpoints. Running only wcg and crunching 24/7 minimizes the problems. Currently BOINC will shift after a set amount of time to projects other than WCG, which can introduce checkpoint problems. When I was running multiple projects and the shift was after 1 hour, many things were lost. The shift should be set to at least 3-4 hours or more.

It depends on the project and graphics display for the UD interface. One one, the detail percentage would jump up. On another, the green line would hit the end and start over. It's been a while since I've run the UD interface and my memory is getting hazy. I have not seen the HDC display at all so I don't know what the clue is.

If you are running the add-on UDMonitor, the flask will change from blue to yellow. It will then go from yellow to red if it has been awhile. When the flask changed from red to blue there will also be a lot of disk activity. You have just passed a checkpoint. The timing will also be visible in the UDMonitor log. The settings are adjustable to more closely match the checkpoint frequency.

With BOINC, there's no easy way to tell. Keeping your computer on as long as possible and extending the time between project switches is about all you can do to minimize checkpoint problems.

Re: force a checkpoint

For FightAIDS@Home, the Application View on the UD client shows a graphic view with a green line being drawn. When the green line reaches the right end, the program writes a check point and the green line starts over again at the left. Sometimes the green line suddenly backs up a little and starts moving right again. Rick Alther says this happens when an 'attempt' fails. Whatever an attempt is. But eventually it should reach the right end and checkpoint.

Re: force a checkpoint

Lawrence, to check my comprehension from previous discussions, should there then not appear a reference red dotted line as confirmation?

Re: force a checkpoint

Here's a quick cheat guide to when our projects checkpoint, by watching the graphics on UD (HPF1 included for completeness):

* HPF1 - whenever the percent incremented, a checkpoint occurred (this works for BOINC as well).
* FAAH - when the green line makes it to the end and then starts over, a checkpoint has occurred.
* HPF2 - Every time the graphs reach the end and start over, a checkpoint has occurred
* HDC - It checkpoints after the "Applying filters" stage and every 10 minutes while the masks are being displayed. It also checkpoints when the current filter bank is complete ("Applying filters" means a new filter bank has started).

A note on FAAH, since there are some tough workunits going out now: The green line is an estimate of how long a particular docking will take. If we reach the end of the scale and we haven't completed, we readjust our estimate and continue. This is why the percent and the green line pull back sometimes. It's not because of an endless loop. There is a maximum number of iterations for each docking so iit will complete eventually. However, most of the time it takes significantly fewer iterations than the maximum.
e.g. lets say the maximum is 100 and on average it might take 10 iterations. However, with these tough WUs, we'll hit 10, not be done, and readjust to say 15...and so on until the docking completes or 100 iterations are complete.

The red line should appear after the first checkpoint has been written. So no red line means that you do not have ANY checkpoints stored.

I had a few short workunits complete without any red lines. Most of them will get one eventually.

Question: The red line is a minimum value line. If the minimum were the same and not any lower, could the system decide NOT to generate a red line?

The red line shows the graph of the best docking completed so far, so if you had a WU complete without a red line appearing, then that WU was configured for only 1 docking.
